This is called phrasing or articulation. It’s how we treat the individual notes of a scale or phrase. Notes with nothing over or under them are each tongued individually. Notes under a slur line are not tongued at all, only the very first note of the group. Notes with a dot above or below them are tongued quickly for a short sound. This term is commonly called “staccato”.
