The Dominant 7 Scale – Introduction

In this video

  • Introduce the Dominant 7 Scale
  • How it compares to the Major Scale
  • How it compares to the Pentatonic Scale
  • Your 1st step; practicing with the backing track

This is in some way a continuation of our Tequila studies, since we’ve looked at the solo section already. Of course we only looked at the technical side of how to play it.

This lesson looks at the theory behind it and how we use the Dominant 7 Scale to improvise over it. Once you learn this scale and understand the theory behind it it will become a great tool in your “improvisation tool kit”.

So…grab your Tequila sheet music and follow along!

The next lesson:

You’ll learn about creating short themes (riffs) from the scale.
I’ll demonstrate a few of these short riffs plus end with a very cool embellishment called the minor 3rd trill.
