My cover of Baker street is somewhat different than the way most sax players cover it, especially the first few bars, I tried purposely to keep the sound down, (i guess that would be darker) sometimes the Baker street opening sounds a little screeched to me. I guess it is a calmer cover than most like.

like the suggestion of thinking of playing the scales as practicing tones, i kind of do much of what he suggests already. One thing that i find important is to have a “PURPOSE” for playing. Playing alone all the time can get a little boring so that’s why i make so many videos, nothing helps keep you focused on playing well than recording a song…[Read more]

William I have both of those reeds the onyx and the copper, i play them regularly but when recording i find i have a more dependable sound with the medium hemp, just a preference i noted that Johnny uses the onyx a lot. BTW would love to get a fatboy heard a lot of good things about it. Leo

James that is the best explanation i’ve had on the difference. Listening to my latest video (baker st) would you describe the sound as bright or dark?

James your information is so helpful, i just started printing it off the forum for future reference, excellent stuff, you might consider setting up a You Two channel where you could share all this saxophone knowledge with a bigger audience. By the way how would you describe a bright sound to a dark sound.

James i buy just about everything to do with a saxophone on line, including all my saxophones but with people like you supplying great info on a wealth of maters it is not like i am buying blindly. Your little music store sounds like a great place to hang out.

Hello James, when i started playing again i had no idea what reeds would work for me so tried a bunch, i was burning threw a bunch of reeds they just did not hold up well, then noted Johnny (our Mentor) was using the fiberreed exclusively so i bought one of each type they had (pricey) and landed on the hemp medium love it, will stick with it,…[Read more]

Try a fiberreed works great right out of the box I have one of each type in medium strength, my favorite is the hemp. And they last a long long time, Check Johnny’s review of the fiberreed you will never go back to wood. BTW i have a few new boxes of Vandoren’s, have never opened them and probably never will.

Hello SP, wow that drummer Chris Bates is great, had me tapping along with his cover, God love the drummer, what would music be without them, tried it once and failed, much too tiring.
