Great work Simon! It sounds to me like you’ve learned plenty in just 2 and a half years! Also, took a listen to your Blue Christmas recording, it sounds really great bud! Keep it up! 🙂
November 22, 2018 at 2:59 am #77907I can see where you’re coming from Brother Cavefish. So far this reed has worked well on my SYOS and my Otto Link Tonemaster. I feel I still get a warmer, darker, vintage jazz tone on the Link with the new reed still, but it is still slightly brighter than a cane reed. I’d be curious what the other Hartmann reeds would sound like on it for the heck of it. Might be something I’ll try in the near future.
And thanks a lot Pete, that is quite a compliment! When you got the hemp reed, and then the onyx reed, did you notice any difference in the playability with the consistency of the strength between the two? I wouldn’t mind giving the hemp a try. I really don’t think I will be buying cane reeds anytime soon.
November 18, 2018 at 7:23 pm #77725Also, I know some use an interface, a microphone, and then connect it to their PC and use a program such as Garage Band, which I have heard some pretty darn good recordings off of, and then upload the file that way. Another easy down and dirty way to record would be breaking out the phone, and recording either audio or a video of the performance. The phone can work decently if you position the device using some trial and error. Then if it’s a video, simply upload it straight to YouTube and share the link! Just an idea.
Anybody have anything to add or suggestions? I am not too familiar with the interfaces for PCs and computer editing software, so input would be helpful.
November 18, 2018 at 6:43 pm #77722Hello Jose Luis!
Thanks for the encouraging words, and compliment. The horn seems to be breaking in wonderfully, and if you get a chance to try one, you outta! 🙂
I do upload previously recorded stuff onto Soundcloud. I know they have some sort of option on the app to record straight to it, but I have never really messed with it.
I personally use a Tascam DP-24 digital recorder with the SD card option. I record and edit everything on the device, and then use an USB cord to the PC, and basically use the recorder as a flash drive in a sense, with all the files being available to be downloaded into the PC or the website. I am sure there are easier ways to do this, but that is how I’ve done it.November 18, 2018 at 4:12 pm #77717Thanks again Pete! And talk about seller fees, eBay has killed me with them. I don’t sell on there anymore. I now go on either Reverb or by other means. Good luck with selling your mouthpiece Brother Cavefish, I am sure it won’t last long!
November 17, 2018 at 7:30 pm #77637Thanks a lot for the feedback folks! It is nice to hear it, and will push me to keep working on it!
November 17, 2018 at 7:29 pm #77636I definitely need to get my hands on one of these 10mFan Mouthpieces now. Sounds like a great product! I have always used Rovner ligatures, though I can not honestly tell much of a difference between the dark and light honestly. But, that could just be me. They work pretty good on most of my mouthpieces.
@pete That song is with the new horn/mouthpiece. They seem to pair together well in my opinion. I am happy with it.November 16, 2018 at 4:31 pm #77592Pretty impressive names there! How do you like the one from 10mfan? I have wanted to give them a try.
November 15, 2018 at 6:03 pm #77575Brother Cavefish! I hope you’ve been well!
I actually got a custom mouthpiece made by SYOS about 2 months ago, which is a pretty neat company based out of France. I went with a 7* opening, high baffle, with a large chamber. I like how diverse it can sound. It can scream in Rock and Roll tunes, play smoothly in a swing chart, and soft and warm in a ballad. I’m super happy with it.
May 24, 2018 at 6:39 am #71752@Johnny I just watched the comparison video, and wow what a difference that was between the two! That Claude Lakey has a such a bigger sound, and fits that horn and your style to a perfect match!
The alto piece I uploaded was using the Jumbo Java. I typically use my Meyer for my smoother, swing pieces, but I do agree as I believe there is a better option for that, for my horn. I bought the Meyer for the same reason as you mentioned, I was told “that’s what all the alto players use!” Haha
Now going to keep working on things! Appreciate the insight and your time as always, Johnny!
