Hey everyone!
So I have changed up the way I practiced here lately. Like many, I do not have a band to practice with. Background tracks are an excellent solution to this. I recently made two purchases. The “Real Book”, and a computer program called Band In A Box (BIAB). For those who are not familiar, the Real Book is a large collection of…[Read more]

Great work Simon! It sounds to me like you’ve learned plenty in just 2 and a half years! Also, took a listen to your Blue Christmas recording, it sounds really great bud! Keep it up! 🙂

I can see where you’re coming from Brother Cavefish. So far this reed has worked well on my SYOS and my Otto Link Tonemaster. I feel I still get a warmer, darker, vintage jazz tone on the Link with the new reed still, but it is still slightly brighter than a cane reed. I’d be curious what the other Hartmann reeds would sound like on it for the hec…[Read more]

I hate to ramble, but I am pretty thrilled about this. I really wouldn’t call this a review, but maybe more so a testimony.
So, about a year ago, I began hunting for a reed to stick with and get my money’s worth out of. I was tired of buying a box of Vandoren’s, only to get one, maybe two good reeds out of the box. It was a waste of money.…[Read more]

Also, I know some use an interface, a microphone, and then connect it to their PC and use a program such as Garage Band, which I have heard some pretty darn good recordings off of, and then upload the file that way. Another easy down and dirty way to record would be breaking out the phone, and recording either audio or a video of the performance.…[Read more]

Hello Jose Luis!
Thanks for the encouraging words, and compliment. The horn seems to be breaking in wonderfully, and if you get a chance to try one, you outta! 🙂
I do upload previously recorded stuff onto Soundcloud. I know they have some sort of option on the app to record straight to it, but I have never really messed with it.
I…[Read more] -

Thanks again Pete! And talk about seller fees, eBay has killed me with them. I don’t sell on there anymore. I now go on either Reverb or by other means. Good luck with selling your mouthpiece Brother Cavefish, I am sure it won’t last long!

I definitely need to get my hands on one of these 10mFan Mouthpieces now. Sounds like a great product! I have always used Rovner ligatures, though I can not honestly tell much of a difference between the dark and light honestly. But, that could just be me. They work pretty good on most of my mouthpieces.
@pete That song is with the new…[Read more]

Well, I took a stab at these two charts arranged by Johnny. Both were a blast to play! Still have some work to do on Santa Claus is Coming to Town with the higher parts, but with practice, I’ll get it! 🙂 Thanks for the tunes,…[Read more]

Brother Cavefish! I hope you’ve been well!
I actually got a custom mouthpiece made by SYOS about 2 months ago, which is a pretty neat company based out of France. I went with a 7* opening, high baffle, with a large chamber. I like how diverse it can sound. It can scream in Rock and Roll tunes, play smoothly in a swing chart, and soft and w…[Read more]

Well, after years of playing vintage horns, I finally decided to try something a bit different. I sold my Conn Chu Berry Tenor, and got this P. Mauriat Tenor. It has a pretty rich tone, and great ergonomics with the key work. I tried a few other new horns too, including Yamaha, Selmer, Cannonball, Etc, and this one came out on top for me at…[Read more]

@Johnny I just watched the comparison video, and wow what a difference that was between the two! That Claude Lakey has a such a bigger sound, and fits that horn and your style to a perfect match!
The alto piece I uploaded was using the Jumbo Java. I typically use my Meyer for my smoother, swing pieces, but I do agree as I believe there is a…[Read more]

Thanks for the input, @brother-cavefish . That would make sense thinking about it. I’ll give the old cane reed a shot on it, get some that are a little more firmer than the equivalent to my Legere. I think that may help with the solution.
Thanks again

@brother-cavefish I am going to have to give that a try. After hearing the Ray Charles version, I really wanna give it a shot now! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
@saxomonica I can’t say that I have heard of them, but let me do some research! Pittsburgh isn’t too terribly far from Baltimore by any means! 🙂

Working on getting used to those baffle mouthpieces. It’s taken some time, especially with intonation. Seems like long tone exercises have helped a bit. Regardless, here is my progress so far!

Hello all!
I am newer to the higher baffle mouthpieces. I don’t seem to have a problem with my reeds for my alto in regards to which mouthpiece I use, Meyer 5 and a Vandoren Jumbo Java.
However on tenor, I am using a 2.5 Legere synthetic reed, which works great with my Otto Link Tone Master, but seems to want to close up in the higher r…[Read more]
