Hi James, you are really making me feel useless now. I’m wondering what I have done in the last six years.
I was listening to my three soundcloud recs and thought I was better skilled then – shock – horror!
I suppose that’s what happens when one becomes demotivated and stops investing in the skills. -

Hi Saxomonica, when you’re over sixty your memory helps you forget the unpleasant things and everything was better back then – LOL
Don’t worry about things I don’t remember. If it did happen, I probably deserved it as my playing isn’t very good anyway. If one doesn’t like honest feedback then they should post their sub-standard efforts in public…[Read more] -

Hi James, have you played the Jet? JJ has a number of MPs now that are really worth play testing. I can’t do that here but from what you’ve told me the stores carry a much greater range of products to view and test out. I phoned the store this morning and the sales person told me they had the JJ MP in stock (the website indicated zero stock)
I…[Read more] -

Hi James, so a 7 gap then?
I’ve just found a JJDC6 so it’s going to get interesting.

Hi Pete, the problem for us South Africans is getting hold of one which doesn’t cost the Earth.
I just love the dark tone of this MP. My wife says that it just sounds like a proper sax 🙂
Cheers

Hi James, it sounds very good if you are looking for a bright sound. Which size are you going to get?
My TW H20 is surprising just how soft it can play. It sometimes sounds like a flute and I use it for church on my YAS26 which I really love.I was tempted to get the HR* for the dark tone, but couldn’t find one available and ended up buying…[Read more]

Has anyone noticed how the low D# on altos is quite a bit flatter than the rest of the note range?
I checked both my YAS26 and YAS62 altos and they both show this symptom on the tuner.
I can’t compensate sufficiently to bring the note in tune. -

Hi Guys, I thought I’d try an experiment and it works really well. I collected a cupful of beeswax from a honey farmer. Melted it in a tuna tin on the stove and ran it through a sieve to clean it. Melting the clean wax in the tin again, I added some coconut grease (used for frying) to make it softer (3-8% of volume) and stirred it in really well.…[Read more]

Check out this free online metronome.
I recorded a 5 minute sample and uploaded it to my phone to use when practicing my latest piece.

I saw a video on Charlie Parker who practised 11-15 hours a day.
Apparently he was quite fond of H. Klose 25 daily exercises. -

Hi James, I had a look at the focusrite solo option, but my USB Mic will work fine until when I get to record again. I’ve transposed a number of Largos and Larghettos from my Baroque CD’s I have acquired. Corelli, Tellerman, Bach and various other composers. As usual I just called them Largo and forgot to place the composers name on the sheet, so…[Read more]

Hi James
It’s good to hear of someone enjoying South Africa.
I have a tech question for you. How would you set up a microphone if there is a distance of 12m between a microphone and the sound system?
What would you buy? USB can only cover 5m, so I guess it would have to be a XLR setup?Cheers

I spoilt myself and bought a YAS62. It it 200g heavier than my YAS26 and has a more mellow sound.
I played my YAS26 with a 1,9mm MP but discovered that the YAS62 is more free blowing and I didn’t have enough wind power to spare.
I had to go back to a narrow gap MP and I’ve only just moved back to a Selmer C**.
Isn’t it strange how another Yamaha…[Read more] -

Hi James
Good to see you are still playing.
You could do what I do and place all the recording equipment in a suitcase.
It could even be wired up so you just open it up and plug in the mains and you’re ready to GOGO.Cheers

Hi Mark, thanks for the info. I had found the BetterSax chart, but the video is also really helpful.
I was hoping for a person with the same YAS-62 sax I have, to tell me his/her fingering for G#/Ab.
I have tried Jonas’ Alto fingering but some of these just don’t work on my sax (my lack of skill?)The Theo Wanne Water MP has made it much easier…[Read more]
