Thanks Leo, I think I kind of sucked on this song, I really had a hard time keeping up with the pace, but it was a great song to just go through and play along (as best I could) with the music Johnny has written out for it. My sight reading skills are lacking, this tune has helped. Plus it’s great being able to go through the sheet music and…[Read more]

Thanks Gary and Leo!! This was a fun tune, I’m still jamming around on it, I went out on the driveway the other day and played a few tunes for the neighbors using some backing tracks and this was the song they all liked the most. Harlem Nocturne is always my favorite but it probably scared the kids… ha ha!
Let, give it a go, I’m a bit out…[Read more]

I’ve come to the conclusion it’s time to just finish this and move on, I have no clue why this song gave me such a hard time but it did, maybe quarantine is getting to me, who knows. Although I did have fun playing around with my new Mic, I used the “tenor sax” eq setting on Logic ProX, the mix sounded okay in my headphones but a little blah…[Read more]

I just picked up an inexpensive Sterling ST170 active ribbon mic that sounds great, under $200. I was using an AKG 420 condenser (no longer made) and it was okay. I like the Sterling much better. Would be nice to have a Neumann!!!

Wow, great playing Scott! Johnny nailed it, need to bring up your sax in the mix (I have the same issue when I mix down tunes), other than that keep recording and posting!

Lol! Yeah it’s proving to be quite the challenge!!! I’m on take 78… I’m sure my neighbors hate me!!

Thank you all! I’m working on How Sweet it Is this week, hope to have it dialed in enough to record soon. Being locked away has really helped in me understanding how to use the recording gear I have, there are a lot of “subtleties” involved in recording that have an impact on the sound. Youtube is a huge benefit!!! Stay safe everyone!

Trying to do one project a week, I had to wait last week for the mic I ordered to arrive, the one I was using was probably dropped one too many times! The new mic (a Sterling 179 active ribbon mic) arrived on Saturday, I took it out, hooked it up and recorded Something this morning. Not polished but I really like how the mic responded (no…[Read more]

Thanks Randy, a friend recommended a Sterling ST170 active ribbon mic. He does quite a bit of recording and said for the money they are a good mic for brass & woodwinds. I checked the price and guitar center had them on sale for $179. I ordered one, it’ll be interesting to see how it compares. He also recommended the Rode NT1 but I didn’t wan…[Read more]

Thank you all! Just trying to keep busy, I spent some time cleaning up my little music room and picking out a few backing tracks to play along with during the isolation! I record using a AKG 420 mic into a presonus tube preamp and a Scarlet 2i2 interface & I use Logic Pro X software. I’m still looking for a better mic (reasonably priced!). A…[Read more]

Having fun with backing tracks from Johnny’s music page, trying to make the best of not leaving the house. I gave Stand By Me a go this morning. My tenor needs some work, unfortunately my tech isn’t taking any business until this mess is over. Oh well.

Playing around with Johnny’s track, for whatever reason (ha) it’s a little hard to concentrate but it’s something I need to do more of (and worry less). It’s not good but it was fun playing along.

A friend asked if I could record a version of Hallelujah for them, they saw a street performer playing the song on an alto and they video they took didn’t turn out all that well. It’s actually a fun song to play around with, I found a decent backing track on amazon an created a simple score in Dmaj for the sax. I’ll probably go back and record…[Read more]

Short clip of a band I was playing with on 1-16-2020 at a local music venue (The Coach House). We were the opening act for blues guitarist/singer Coco Montoya. I practiced with the band twice before the gig, great guys & the gig was a hoot.
