Pete, I should have picked up a merlot, they play smoother than the black widow. I’ve tried a number of ligs, like you finding a good fitting life for these large pieces is a challenge. But, I’ve been using a Saxworks Clarity ligature. It can literally be used with any size mouthpiece. Go check them out.

Hi Pete, I was using a 10M Fan Black Widow hard rubber mouthpiece and a Copper Carbon fibereed on this tune. It’s a bit mellower than my metal mouthpiece I usually use.

Thanks Pete,
I redid the song using my hard rubber mouthpiece, much mellower (which was kind of what I was wanting). The link above is no longer working, anyone wanting to give a listen please use this new link.

Another fun tune to play along with, lots of room for doing “different things”. I tried to progress through the three passages from playing it pretty straight to being a little out there.

interesting, I don’t hear much difference in my tone when I play a copper or a select jazz 3S but they do have a different feel. I’ve tried hemps in the past and found them to be very stuffy for me. I’ve heard folks say the copper is much brighter but I haven’t experienced that in my setup, I find the cane reeds I use are equally as bright on my…[Read more]

So far, I’ve been very happy with the copper reeds I’ve purchased, I picked up two at the NAMM show in mid January (just before they released) and I dropped my mouthpiece with on of the on and it chipped the reed, but it would have destroyed a cane reed as well. The other one I’ve been using since January and it plays great (I would have gone…[Read more]

Thank you folks, this was a very challenging song, I listened a bunch of times to Johnny play it and then listened a bunch of times to Marvin sing it, then I’d try recoding it and just blow the timing. This wasn’t a “one take” song, I’m sure my neighbors think I have Tourette’s!
Now on to a duet with my oldest granddaughter, she plays alto in…[Read more]

Hi folks,
Late last year I was listening to a tune a friend had recorded, I asked him what mouthpiece he was using and he told me he was playing a really inexpensive mouthpiece he had purchased on eBay. He sent me a link to the auction site, I checked it out and thought I’d buy one just to see. Not that I needed another mouthpiece, I’m down to…[Read more]

My venture into the realm of “smooth jazz”… ha, I’m not good at smooth! My wife likes this tune so I tried recording her a version this morning. Found a decent guitar backing track and wrote out what I thought was the melody line… I think I got close? Plus I got to diddle around on some of the outro.

A one take (well almost, I bumped my mic near the end of the tune and recorded over me swearing) of Elton’s “Your Song”. I overplayed this, however in keeping with the spirit of “one take” I gotta own it! Your Song

Thank you Jake. Yeah I do a lot of growling and some flutter tongue mixed in there as well. My mouthpiece is very similar to the piece you’re playing (metal/high baffle) so it gets a certain amount of “buzz” to it on it’s own. I was thinking of the sax player for George Thorogood back in the day (Hank Hurricane Carter) and his lines in bad to…[Read more]

Here’s my one take version of Heart Break Hotel, I listened to Johnny’s cover of this tune a few times and thought I had some ideas…. some of them worked but the walk down to the low Bb, eh, not so much but I guess this is how I would have played it live and I’m actually not to displeased with the results. I played my Viking solid nickel…[Read more]

I wanted to get two tunes recorded this week, I gave Wonderful Tonight a quick run through and recorded the song in one take. I want to improve my ear/melody/timing skills. There are a couple rough spots but things are improving.
