That’s sad, Joe was a great player, I only saw him play once (even though he was in the LA area) in Long Beach at a blues festival in 2008, this was after he had a stroke, he couldn’t play much but it was cool seeing him before he quit altogether. Big Jay loved talking to the crowd about all the great times he had in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s hard…[Read more]

I was lucky enough to see big Jay play a number of times in the 70’s and 80’s. His shows were always a lot of fun, he loved walking the crowd and charming the ladies.

Mike Potter replied to the topic The Selmer Mark 6 is an 'over rated' Saxophone?!?!? in the forum General Questions 5 years, 7 months ago
This topic comes up quite a bit on other forums and FB groups related to playing sax. I had a Mark VI tenor back in the mid 80’s, SN was isn’t the 230K range, it had been relacquered and had the tone holes leveled. The intonation was sketchy, most likely from the tone hole work but mechanically it was a solid horn. I kick myself in the butt for…[Read more]

Hi John, I’m using a Westcoast Sax MoFo II 8* mouthpiece and select jazz 3M reeds. I’ve also been using a Jody Jazz SuperJet 8* metal with the same reeds and get a pretty decent rock/blues sound out of it as well.

Hi Forum,
Below are some clips from my last gig, I’ve been practicing minor/major pent and blues scales quite a bit over the last couple months, and listening quite a bit to some of my fave sax players (red prysock, Lee Allen, Big Jay McNeely, Sam Taylor) not that I’ll ever sound/play like them but I really like the phrasing I hear and try and…[Read more]

many years ago I bought a used Otto link tone master, I just played rock and blues, it was “ok” and like you I couldn’t figure out why I just couldn’t get the buzzy vibe I wanted so badly to get (ala Sil Austin, Red Prysok). I was taking lessons from a guy who let me try is berg 120/1 sms, Cha Ching! So, was it “berg magic”, na, just a high…[Read more]

Thanks Simon, yes it’s a sax deflector made by Jazzlabs. I tried one out at the NAMM show, it does a good job of letting you hear your sax. This was the first time I tried it in a live performance, worked fine until the 2nd set when the volume knobs on all the electric instruments magically went up… I ended up taking it off and having the…[Read more]

This is my main tenor, it’s a Viking M58SNS, Rich Maraday was designing and importing sax’s from Taiwan, this model is solid nickel silver (brushed) – neck, body, bell with black nickel silver plated brass keyword. Modern action, very free blowing, brighter than the brass M58 (I have an unlacquered M58 tenor as well)…[Read more]

great advice Johnny, I went a listened to a couple of tracks for this song on youtube and remixed the output using those mixes, oddly enough (using Logic Pro) I find the bounced mix a little different from the track playing back in the DAW. Not sure why… anyhow, here’s the remixed…[Read more]

I put some sax tracks on an original song for a friend who lives in Denmark (I’m in CA), his tune is very “Bruceish”, I’m definitely no Clarence but he was pretty happy with the solo (starts at 2:32 not he song) and he submitted it for a song writing contest in his homeland, have no clue how it did but it was fun putting down tracks and sending…[Read more]
