Hey Johnny. I have tried the lig both ways and find it’s best when the screw is on the top of the MP but then I can hardly get it slid down over the reed without it moving the reed and it is so tight when it is in place that I can’t slide my reed back into place.

Just wondering if anybody has gotten a Winslow lig for the fatboy yet.? and if so what is the cost of it? I am not impressed with the lig that came with the mouthpiece. I’m having a terrible time getting it in place and adjusted. It also feels like it is not applying even pressure to my reeds and is pinching them. I find that in an hour of playing I will adjust it maybe 3 to 4 different times. It’s just not comfortable.

I live in a small town in the middle of Kansas and I too struggle with finding “sax shops”. What I have done is find a good music store and talk to the tech. Most of the time the school district or college university will have a shop they take their instruments to and that is a good place to start. I have had an alto completely gone through about 2 years ago and it ran about $400.00. Not cheap but considering my options I did not have much choice. If you only have a few pads leaking you might get by a lot cheaper. Good luck.

I agree with Dazza. The search is over. Got my MB2 Fat Boy a couple days ago and am thoroughly impressed. I’ve been playing on a Otto Link for almost as long as I’ve played a tenor but the feel of the FB is not that much different and the free blowing ease of playing is incredible. I have not had problems with the lower register for a long time but the overtones and altissimo has been rather elusive for me. About 2 days before the FB arrived I was finally able to hit the G altissimo at will and hold it. Tried it with the FB and holy cow!!! I have hit multiple notes in the altissimo register and have been more consistent in hitting the overtones as well. Everything about this piece has been a great experience so far and I’m looking forward to improving with it. My saxophone journey has been a long one as I began playing almost 30 years ago. Unfortunately I took a long break a couple of times during that thirty years and started playing again about 1 1/2 to 2 years ago. Had my horns overhauled and got acquainted with this site. The only sax teacher I had was a music teacher of many different instruments, and really only knew how to teach music. There is a HUGE difference between a music teacher and a sax teacher. Thanks Johnny. I’ve learned more from you about the sax in the last year or two than I have in the previous 20. Your site is great and the sheet music, courses, and recommendations you make have made a huge difference in my playing ability. Rock On

Gotta love Jimmy Dorsey on the alto. One of my favorite ’50’s alto sax songs is “So Rare”. Think he died about 6 months after this song hit the charts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCoZLDwMamE

Try humming while you play the notes. Not quite as nasty but is still effective.

My saxophone is in excellent working order and is only about a year old (Keilwerth MKX). No leaks anywhere. I can play every note from the low Bb to the altissimo F# and most of those in tune. My tone is really pretty good but does go a little flat toward the altissimo range, still not too bad. I am wondering more and more about my set up but don’t have any proof of it. My set up is Otto Link STM *6 and I use a Vandorren Red Jazz cut 2 1/2 or a Rigotti Gold 3 light. I’ve actually had better luck in the upper range with the Red Jazz reeds but both reeds are comfortable to play with. Crazy thing is I have been working on this altissimo course for 6 months or better and I devote a lot of my practice time to it. It’s getting discouraging.

Yes I am using the JF altissimo course.

I have been very impressed with the Vandoren Hygro reed case: http://www.amazon.com/Vandoren-HRC20-Clarinet-Baritone-Saxophone/dp/B007WQIFUW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1456320327&sr=8-2&keywords=tenor+sax+reed+case+vandoren At first I thought maybe it was just another gimmick but it really does keep my reeds in ready to play condition. As long as the sponge is wet the humidity is almost perfect and I am able to play from the low Bb to the high F# right out of the case, no problems. The old reed protectors always left my reeds nasty and wavy on the tip but this keeps them straight and in like new condition.

Yeah Dazza it will for sure be a big adjustment. Currently I am playing a 6* link so I am positive the air support is going to be a drastic change and jump. I do have a small variety of reeds but might have to try a few more. Still “hoping to grow into it” over time. Just love the big full sound JF gets out of it and had to try it :).
