RockinRobin replied to the topic Question about the Fiber Carbon Guardalas in the forum Mouthpieces 5 years, 10 months ago
Yep, I used to use cane reeds. I find the onyx reeds reliable, dependable, consistent. So I use the carbon onyx reeds Medium and some times medium soft. I also have a couple carbon fiber reeds. All for tenor sax. The Guardalas that I have have a wider tip openning, wider than 105 but the baffle is higher which makes them plowable. I suppose I like…[Read more]

RockinRobin replied to the topic Question about the Fiber Carbon Guardalas in the forum Mouthpieces 5 years, 10 months ago
Michael: The Jody Jazz tip opening chart says the 7* tip opening is 105 and the 8* is 115. I have a fiber carbon fat boy 7* and 8*. I was trying to blow Misty in sub tones. I couldn’t blow any sub tones with the 7* using an onyx reed medium, my favorite reed. I tried with my MBII fatboy. I couldn’t blow the fatboy. The only mouthpiece I can blow…[Read more]

the sheet music is a lot bigger and more pronounced. I compared it with some past sheet music like “merci merci”. Yep better sheet music; I like it.

I played the first page. Bb’s were not not duds. They were full sounding but not the velvety sound I’m looking for. I think I want more of a sub tone Bb. Good Eb scale practice. I went up and down the Eb scale. syncopating, and jazzing up the Eb scale

Misty: Great rendition Johnny. Good practice for the low Bb; trying to get that low velvet Bb sound. I’m still in Florida; moving soon, around March 5th. I’ll be away from the sax for about 2 weeks and without internet for about a month or so starting on March 4.

Ya Michael. We’ll be moving to Taos NM about the 1st of March. Our house is in the area south of Los Ranchos de Taos. A little north of where you fished. Off of highway 68 to hiway 110 to Vista Linda. The house has electricity and propane and well water. I’ll look into getting natural gas from the New Mexican Natural Gas Company.

My MBII fiber carbon 7* fat boy blows well now that I got rid of the ridge that was coming down the top side edge of the table. The table is now flat, no ridge and the fiber carbon Onyx reed fits very flat. I now get a good suck pop

Most ofmy music is packed away. I do keep a ring note book full of johnny’s music close by, Hey Michael. Taking some time off from fishing I see. Happy to see you back. In March 2019 I’ll be blowing In Taos New Mexico. From Florida to Northern New Mexico. I’ll have to learn some Tejano Rancheras.

I also wiped down the table top of my MBII metal fat boy with my reed geek and I got a suck pop using a fiber Onyx reed. It was a light wipe.

Johnny,
We know the suck-pop is not the end all test for how well the reed sits on the mouthpiece table. Using an onyx medium reed on my theo juanne 7* slant sig 2 I can always get a suck pop. On my 7* fiber carbon fat boy I got no suck pop using the same reed. Using my reed Geek I noticed a ridge on my fiber carbon fat boy so one swipe down…[Read more] -

I’ve been playing the new song, “The Girl From Ipanema. I have this song in my Stan Getz book. The transcriber has it in E flat. In the Stan Getz book there are a lot of side key D’s without the octave key, only middle D and a side E flat. I prefer your version in the key of G. Thanks for the music

Correction: “Joy to The World” is actually in D major concert. For tenor sax I have it in E major

Every day I practice going from low Bb to middle Bb to the F above middle Bb. I do this without moving my fingers. I can go from low Bb to middle Bb but I can’t get a firm F. Only a weak F. I’m also working on “Joy To The World” by Three Dog Night. “Jeremiah was a bull-frog…Was a good friend of mine”. In the key of E major.
