“Help Yourself” ala Tom Jones. “Me and Bobby McGee” is still on the Music stand. Also added to the music stand is “Help Your Self” ala Tom Jones. Backing tracks for both songs are loaded into GarageBand> Not easy keeping up with backing tracks. They move along at a good clip. “All I want for Christmas is You” – best Christmas tune.

Thanks Johnny,
I found a karaoke backing track ala Jerry Lee Lewis. So I loaded the backing track on to my Garage Band so I’ll be recording myself, just Me and Bobby McGee. I have the sheet music in my Bb music book. The backing track is in C major and my sheet music is in D major so we’er good to go. -

I’ve been playing “Me and Bobby McGee” in the key of “D” for tenor sax. I don’t have a backing track. Maybe Johnny might think about “Me and Bobby McGee”

I’m working on “Money” by first humming the melody using the notes (F#). And beating out the beat with my mind and hand. Also i’m working on “Hot Hot Hot” I have the music for all the instrument parts. The music for sax and trumpet is in “G”, concert “F”. I’m trying to improvise over the whole thing. So I’ll be mixing it up with “O-le O-ley…[Read more]

Thanks for all the info guys. I solved my sound problem. I used a fiber carbon reed recommended by Johnny, and my mouthpiece today is a theo wanne slant sig 2, tip opening 7* and enlighten ligature. In the past I was using a carbon Onyx reed but today the carbon reed had a nice buzz https://www.howtoplaysaxophone.org/product/carbon-tenor/

My sound is no good. Sometimes/often the sound is stuffy. Hard to explain. I suppose I need a hands on teacher. I’m using fiber carbon reeds and onyx reeds, medium and medium soft, mouth pieces 7* and 8 and fat boy. I don’t get that sax sound lately

RockinRobin replied to the topic I Heard it through the Grapevine in the forum Repertoire 5 years, 1 month ago
Looks like “I heard it through the grapevine” is in the key of F minor. the music is divided into 12 bars and 8 bars, and some smaller divisions for the short solos. Is this music a type of blues? Sounds like a motown rhythm and blues

Thanks Johnny
This is a great song I downloaded the the harder version. I count it out, hum along, think of the lyrics as I hum through the notes and frases (the notes that are tied together). I’m trying to memorize it. The song rocks -
RockinRobin replied to the topic Dull sounding middle G in the forum General Questions 5 years, 2 months ago
This morning the horn was ok when I went from middle
b to high G with the octave Key. I’ll blow “I heard it through the grapevine”. I might just be my lip etc. Thanks Johnny

Going from middle B to middle G with the octave key I get a dull hum sound. Could it be a dull reed. Too soft a reed. I’m using a fiber carbon Onyx medium reed. number 8 theo wanna slant sig 2 and 7* mouthpiece, or fiber carbon fatboy 7* and/or 8 tip opening. The Octave key hole seems to be clear

Ok, maybe Johnny might put the sheet music for “You never can tell” in the repertoire section. Mike plays it right and so does Bruce Springsteen and his sax player plays a solo.

Sound was a dud today. I went through all my mouthpieces and reeds and ligatures. Still a dud. I put my teeth on the mouthpieces etc just like Johnny shows in his educational video. I finally ended with a Van Gogh lig and carbon fat boy mouthpiece and medium soft oxycarbon and all the wind I could muster. Every three notes I had to take in more…[Read more]

Thanks Saxomonica. I guess The Kingston Trio could hang the Midnight Special with “The Tijuana Jail”

“The Midnight Special” sounds like a blues. The chord progression follows the same chord progression of “On Top Of Old Smokey”. It’s not a 12 bar blues but it sounds like a blues

RockinRobin replied to the topic Mouthpiece, fiber carbon reeds, fiber carbon Onyx reeds in the forum General Questions 5 years, 4 months ago
You bet. I’ll keep those mediums on hand. I’ve been blowing ‘Wave’ and Sinatra’s “Fly Me To The Moon” and Herb Alpert’s “Spanish Flea” among other things. Cheers

Before I moved to Taos New Mexico I was blowing Medium fiber carbon Onyx reed with ease. After I arrived in Taos (two weeks away from the horn) I had to move to a medium soft reed. The medium reeds became a bit too stiff. Even after three months of blowing two to three hours a day every day the medium reeds were too stiff.Looks like after three…[Read more]
