Haha fantastic! I will try this … I’m an aussie … so will try to adjust as necessary 😉 Thanks for everyone’s input it’s very much appreciated. The moment I get all overtones I will video myself and post it and pass on any tips and help …that helped me to encourage others. Thanks again!

Thanks for all these tips .. I have been quietly observing them. I can hit the normal low Bb (of course) then 1st overtone to Bb , second to F but that third overtone is a bitch! No matter what I try I can NEVER hit it. I am going to try the VAW, VER, VOO and vowel technique above to see if that helps out tomorrow as I’m reading this at night time and I don’t want to hurt my neighbour’s ears. If anyone has ANY other suggestions please post them because I have been on the altissimo course now for months and that is my stumbling block .. the damn third overtone.

Hi well done! I’ve been doing the pick up the pieces song as well but can’t do the altissimo notes yet. Did you go through the altissimo course? I cannot for the life of me do the 3rd overtone. Been at it for over a month now every day. Can sometimes (maybe 1 out of 10 times) hit it. I cheat by using the octave key to get it in my minds eye … then sometimes I can get it without the octave key … but even then it’s difficult. How long did it take you ?!

Hi everyone a few weeks ago I started this post getting people to vote on their favourite song they would like Johnny to do. Here is the list so far (I have collated it from a few posts). If you would like to vote … keep in mind this *** REPERTOIRE SECTION *** and put in your vote. The songs that have a X number next to them means people voted for them that many times (i.e. more popular)

Oh man I’m so glad I saw this post because I have been doing the JF altissimo course now for a few months, and what do you know ? That third overtone really “blows” pardon the pun. The only way I can do it is to sort of cheat a little. I blow the low Bb, then go for the mid Bb then F. Easy … but then to get that next Bb the ONLY way I can do it (currently) is to first use the octave key and have the sound in my mind’s eye (if that makes sense), then let the octave key go and sometimes (maybe 1 out of 10 blows) I can get it. But I feel your pain … you’re definitely not alone. I can’t imagine (at this stage) going higher than that 3rd overtone … not in a million years if it is THIS hard to get the third overtone). I have just finished a sax practice session now and read this thread so I’m going to try the advice above tomorrow and maybe swap out some reed/ mouth piece combos to see if I get any success – I’m clutching at straws now out of frustration. Please post your progress as it is very encouraging if you guys can get it. Thanks a lot and may your horn blow hard.

G’day mate – I am also from Sydney, Australia. My first sax was a Yamaha YAS-23 just like yours. Awesome sax to start with but sooner or later .. you may find yourself moving to the dark side … that is .. to a tenor. Welcome to this awesome site. You will find lots of help here, and Johnny is very helpful. You should join the Premium access. It costs peanuts compared to a private tutor and there are full on basic to advanced courses. Highly recommended and I am not paid to say that! Good luck! Dave

Hi there – I’ve been doing the Altissimo coure for about a month now, and just getting through the overtone part (Having a bitch of a time getting the third overtone) but that is not the reason for my post. Regarding the fingering for high notes I have a question for you all who have managed to get these illusive sounds. Is it possible that some saxes just can’t physically play those high notes? I have a friend of mine in a band club who told me that his Conn cannot get one particular note but all the rest are easy for him. He tried it on my Mark VI and had no issues with his mouth piece. What do you guys think?

Johnny has given us the opportunity to vote for our favourite song! Post on this thread your top 3 in priority order, and Johnny will cover the most popular choices. Go for it!

OK then Johnny. So what you’re saying is that I should put up a new thread and ask everyone to put in their top (say 3) favourite song choices they would like to see you do a cover of in a new thread (in priority order as Jeff suggested). Once you get the responses you would collate them in a spreadsheet and see which ones (If any) are doubled/ tripled up, and prioritise accordingly.

If this is what you meant then I will go ahead and do it – I’ll wait for the go-ahead from you first if this was your intention.

                        Cheers!

                        Dave
