Located a player’s sax in Ann Arbor. Turned out seller Peter Kahn lived in town next to me as kid Summit/New Providence NJ and he went to Michigan University with Andy Stein sax and fiddle Commander Cody who will be my swing fiddle teacher in Aspen this camp summer. Sax sounds amazing. What a difference. It’s a players sax. Ugly but tone and act…[Read more]

Ouch. That steel guitar is not in tune. Not meaning any disrespect but that song would not have inspired me to take up either instrument if I didn’t know better. Lol

Thanks Mark. Sounds like fun. On my bucket list. I bet Lucky never realizes the big influence he has had on many players.
Had a blast incorporating the new sax maneuvers into white Christmas, born to run, and wonderful tonight, particularly leaving G# pinky down and right hand D when going to C# and back to D. Liam

Thanks Mark I am psyched on new tricks.
W Australia cool. Me, sitting on beach in Myrtle Beach SC, USA.
I wondered what happened to Lucky Oceans. Last time I saw him he was with Asleep at the wheel in Central Park NYC in late 70s Schaffer Music Festival. He was one of 8 top band inspirations to us at that time in 70s. We were stealing his…[Read more] -

Thanks Saxomonica
Cool. Forrest really cool too. Very soft air control and never loses the note. Ps Johnny F and Ja Br citing of alternative fingering and rules got me thinking. Of course there has to be rules after all these years of sax development. So I googled and I found more rules. Like leaving right hand down “trick”
when going back and…[Read more] -

Hi Saxominia and Ja Br. Thanks to both of you for responding and the rules, they make sense. Great advice very much appreciated. I had only been using the C side key in pink panther measure 20 and it goes from C natural to B four times. But then I realized I could use it in the triplet in measure 9. That’s what got me thinking in connection with J…[Read more]

Hi Johnny
1. When is it best to use right hand side key for C?
Chromatic glissandos? I can brush my right side 1 finger in combination with left hand fingering for a fast passage from C, B, Bb, and A. Even in Pink Panther it seems that the side key C is a smoother move than playing C with left hand 2 finger in all measures.2. Should one…[Read more]

Hi John
In Pink panther tenor second line 1st note is a C natural. When I scoop it down per articulation lesson I reach a B note so do I not finger a B which happens to be the next note on the chart but rather just go straight to finger the A note? And that sets up an general observation: is it true and common that you can play the next note in a…[Read more] -

Hi Johnny I am a recent member so I’m not sure if these questions have been addressed.
In killer blues 7 licks #5, the lick trills from the D#, E, F and F#. Which note or notes do I trill against each? I watched the 2 trill videos. Is there a pattern that I can apply when the passages start and stop in different chords. Such as do I always t…[Read more]

I just want to publicly commend Johnny for the best explanation of modes that I’ve ever seen. It’s located in his improvisation course major scales. I was exposed to modes many years ago from studying pedal steel but I would always wonder which mode to use and when. Inevitably I was playing modes on steel but didn’t know it. Now I get it. Playi…[Read more]

Always great hearing those stories thanks for sharing Johnny.
Steve B created this magic in the studio which I hope to witness in a live performance but instead get served a watered down version. Is playing rock sax live on stage entirely different from the studio? Do the lows get lost and require upper register to pierce the wall of sound from…[Read more]

One of the great melodies and orchestrated backup Mel.
I wish Johnny F does a whole course on backup which we play 95% of the time: chords, lines, philosophy in backup when to play and when not to as well as how sax harmonizes with other brass— which instrument plays which part if there’s no sheet music, swells, fades etc.
This song came out…[Read more]

This Los Lobos song features, I believe, Steve Berlin, Philly sax band member. It got me to open my case after 25 years and buckle down in retirement to seriously study this incredible instrument. Years ago it was about playing higher register solos like Talk to Me Southside Johnny in Long Beach Island NJ bars and mostly the after gig festivities.…[Read more]
