i’ve been playing Johnny’s Michelle on the Clarinet using a plasticover 3.5 reed and it sounds perfect.
That’s the tone i’m looking for on the Alto, so now, out of all D’addario and Vandoren reeds i’ve tested, i need to pick one that gets me the closest sound i want. It could be a slightly buzzy jazz tone or a deep mellow classical tone.…[Read more]

Day One – The Traditional Reed (3) – I found this reed slightly hard going, but it gives a strong solid classical deep tone, slow responding, and slightly breathy. Suitable for slow tempos not lively tempos.
(Designed to produce a quality of extremely pure sound.)Day Two – The Java Green Reed (3.5) – This Unfiled reed i found more suited to…[Read more]

which do you find easier to learn
playing a new scale from memory?
or
playing a new Melody from memory?
What i find harder is the number of different scales that i can remember how to play from memory. At the moment all i can remember is how to play all 12 Major scales, i would struggle to recall all three types of Minor scales (next on the…[Read more]

am i saying, “if you can’t write a melody, then stick to playing Jazz or playing the Drums”
am i saying “Are different styles of music just defined by a specific drum pattern?”
am i saying “If you want to invent a new style of music, then you have to invent a new drum pattern no ones heard of”
am i saying “just make sure you sound great on…[Read more]

Music style changes is very complex and has nothing to do with IQ, you need to study the relationship of how music has changed over the centuries and recent decades in relation to different countries, and what has caused the changes to take place.
Some countries don’t like to break with traditions, and stick to their cultures very strongly as…[Read more]

I agree with everything said, i’ve bought a few music books more in keeping with what teenagers listen to these days, and i found the melodies were too unsuitable to play on the sax, in the end i gave them away, as in my opinion no one would seriously want to listen to them played on the sax.
But from the other perspective, the pre nineties…[Read more]

i can’t advice you which type of reed to pick as you mouthpiece is different to mine, how they respond on mine will different to how they respond on yours.
best bet is to test all the different reeds, should be easier for you, as you can just buy all No. 1 reeds without have to work out which strength to go for.

Hi Jeff, which vandoren are you playing, as they all are different in how quick or how slow they respond (the difference between playing a slow funeral song and a quick marching song – onward christian soldiers).
The difference in reed design type will be better suited to either one of those tempos and not both of them, and both reeds will sound…[Read more]

if you want a big change in sound, trying different reeds is the 1st thing to do, don’t just think you have to change mouthpieces.
if all fails, then try a different mouthpiece.
but if you change mouthpiece, then you are back to square one, as all those reeds you tried out will play differently.
then when you’ve found the correct reed for your…[Read more]

yeah the screech is the brighter sound belting out, then it calms down and gets more darker. it sounds like someone having a nightmare where they are dreaming they’re falling through space, a cross over between sad, depressing and then calm.
