depending on the ligature you use can transform your overall Pitch from a Mouldy to a clear pitch sound, and also can transform the your overall Tone from a Dark to a Bright Sound. So there are 2 factors to listen out for, getting the balance right between both factors makes a hell of a lot of difference to how you sound in your head when you…[Read more]

The other thing you can’t see in the photograph.
i’ve cut large rectangle holes out of the sides of the rovner ligature, so if you were to look along both sides of the ligature, you would see the sides of both Vamp stock reeds.
Cutting large rectangle holes out of the sides of the ligature has not weakened the holding strength of the ligature,…[Read more]

check out the photo, you can see the two Vamp Stock reeds on the left and right hand side inside the ligature, they are both touching the base sides of the vibrating reed.
on top of the vibrating reed, is another hard Vamp Stock synthetic reed.
As you can see from the photograph, the ligature is way too fat for the mouthpiece barrel
I don’t…[Read more]

on my alto king mouthpiece i use a rovner ligature which is way far too big for the mouthpiece, so i have to place a stock reed on top of the reed inside the ligature so the mouthpiece and reed fit inside the ligature, otherwise the mouthpiece and reed would both fall out of the ligature.
To make the sax sound even louder.
so i cut the Vamp off…[Read more]

currently i only possess one mouthpiece – metal alto guardela king, which is perfect.
So now i decided i would like another mouthpiece but not a metal one, an ebonite one instead, probably because i’ve started playing the clarinet.
Clarinets have a pure sound, whereas saxophones don’t have a pure sound due to the pipe shape and conical shape…[Read more]

Try this out,
when you attach the neck to the saxophone, instead of putting the neck in the position like you normally should do when attaching it to the saxophone.
pull the neck out half an inch or half way out, then tighten the neck screw.
The notes will still be in tune, but sound more heavy. -

look at the height of the finger positions
look at how relaxed the body frame is
look at breathing, this guy doesn’t appear out of breath at the end of each sheet -

quite interesting to see all the articulations played on the sheet and how they should sound. A lot of it is just recognising a lot of common patterns of notes (identical group combination of notes) that are repeated over and over. If you can play any of the combinations in time just by practicing a few solo etudes, it can speed up playing as you…[Read more]

GET YOURSELF A SAX TEACHER.
I know a lot of folks because of their location find it impossible to have sax lessons by a Pro Sax player with years of experience, or find the cost too high.
I was fortunate to live near a sax teacher, and the cost of lessons for one year, i could buy a cheap student sax every year – so it is costly.
The benefit i…[Read more]

hi @Jeff,
That’s funny about the clarinet ligature, weeks ago, i bought a new ligature for my Clarinet, and i when i got home, i compared it to one of my Alto Ligatures – turns out it is the same brand, same make and both are exactly the same. both are designed for classical mouthpieces.Last year after 9 years of working through various practice…[Read more]

I agree with you Leo, i can’t see how the average person can possibly read and play fast tempo passages involving 32nd and 64th notes in various combinations. The eyes can’t keep up, and it’s impossible to read ahead while fingering the keys, and controlling air flow all at the same time.
Yakety Sax – doesn’t have 32nd or 64th notes on the sheet,…[Read more]

The interesting part, is to compare the sound quality of both recordings.
1. both recordings were done in the same room
2. both recordings were recorded with the same JVC camcorder
3. the audio files were extracted from the camcorder movies using Quicktime software
4. both recordings the camcorder was the same distance from the guitar and the…[Read more] - Load More
