thanks John, Thats how I was originally playing the trill. Since I started this on Urgent, I am now thinking I am going to try the additional octave on the F# at start of solo, I went back to your altissimo course to see how to play it up there however it did not go that high, thats pretty much no mans land up there. I tried lipping it…[Read more]

John, Thanks for the quick reply. https://youtu.be/9daJrqjyFBU at 2+5. Johnny, BTW the videos of you playing on your tracks is invaluable on some of them, the music alone doesn’t give the color or articulation. I hope I can get this one down to add to my gig repertoire thank again

John,
I’ve been working your backing tracks quite a bit and I finally got out and did a live solo show. I’ve got another solo show coming up in a few weeks and working on a few new tunes to add, presently working on the tune Urgent and had a question for you or anyone else that may have a suggestion
the G#/A riff that is played twice was not…[Read more]

John , thanks for listening and great point on the pickup notes. I will definitely make the adjustment. I love the cover by Bob James, Al Jareau and David Sanborn.

John,
I should have been here 20 years ago! I will get on this right away. I for the most part am self taught, so it appears I have some work to do.
I think I will start with the neck all the way in, then with James Brown advice tune the mouthpiece to middle C. All embouchure adjustment from there.
Any other comments would be appreciated.…[Read more] -

Reading John’s comment, what could cause a sax to be out of tune? My horn is new and I actually took it to the shop to have it checked as I was having difficulty playing in tune. I always have my mouthpiece out quite away and depending on the day, I have to pull the neck out a bit. Is that normal? I use a guitar tuner that i clip on the s…[Read more]

Bill Hammond started the topic Using a vocal processor for effects in the forum General Questions 4 years ago
I thought I would start a topic on the use of Voice Processors while playing live venues. I am playing in 2 groups and on select songs I just play
a horn section part. An example would be the tune Vehicle. Harmonizing a 3rd 5th and a higher or lower note to get a horn section effect.
I just purchased a Boss VE-20 vocal processor to try this…[Read more] -

I thought I would start a thread to discuss types reeds and mouthpieces that are most effective while playing in the altissimo range. I use a Ralph Morgan rubber, Otto Link metal mouthpieces and Vandoren ZZ #3. I am still having trouble consistently hitting notes above Bb. I have experimenting with 3 1/2 reeds, however its difficult in the low…[Read more]

I am always struggling to get the right amount of effects, both while making a recording as well as live performance. I really don’t know much about it, however while recording, I add and adjust the effects after recording with built in effects. I just started using garage band and it seems to be effective. While playing live I am at the mercy…[Read more]

Excellent, great mixing levels. My personal preference would be a bit of reverb. I have a backing track for Lovely DAY and will give it a go as well. I Also like the idea of adding a track for a horn section. 🎷👍

John, so much. I would like to start on it. As well as the building speed. I already play in the altissimo range, I just want to notice and hit more. I’m pretty good with G A and Bb. After that it’s a crapshoot. I look forward to getting started and glad I found you.
Cheers,
