Please let me know, The carbon onyx reed MH sounds exciting and would like at least one too.
March 27, 2017 at 1:26 pm #51290Received my Hemp and Onyx reed last week and having some mixed opinions about them.
In general Johnny’s demonstration is very accurate.
In my opinion, the carbon onyx reed felt and seemed superior over the hemp.
Also, noticed that they are very accurate using the tuner
(a little flat through out the register but easy to adjust with the mouth).
If every sax player in a horn section would use one of these reeds they should always
play in tune.
However, the altissimo register is for me very unstable. Tried working off a bit on the hemp
reed (at the altissimo point of the reed) but no improvement. So far I experienced that with
the cone reeds, the harder reed the more stable the altissimo range gets (talking #2.5-#3.5).
Would like to try a MH onyx reed instead of the M that I got, Johnny do you have any of those or do you
have any other suggestions?
Lots of benefits with these new reeds though, thanks for introducing them.April 10, 2016 at 2:01 pm #35748Valueable information, thanks again. Can not wait to experementing with your advices.
Above tunes are really some awesome tunes and fun playing.April 10, 2016 at 12:25 pm #35739Shaking one note is easy but several after each other takes a bit more. Thanks
January 28, 2016 at 1:24 am #31608Good advices, will do that tonight. Also found that going back from my DG King to my old MP with a 7 opening helped a lot.
In general a very good advice I never thought of, going to implement that tool in other songs too. Thanks a lot.
BengtJanuary 22, 2016 at 1:25 am #31377Bought my GD King only after a few month of my saxophone playing eger to get the right sound. Found the opening size to be far to big for a beginner. Now after 3 years really serious playing I’m starting to be able to play on it but really can’t recomend it for everyday practising if your ears are sensitive, it really goes so much loader than a 7 opening tip MP. It is not for everybody, check it out before purchasing it would my suggestion for any intermediate player. Else, great MP.

October 25, 2015 at 1:48 pm #27204Hi Michael!
Working on a lot of Johnnys songs but still a few things missing in them all, such as expressions, timing and in general too much tension. Practising minimum an hour a day as an average so hopefully something should be posted soon. It’s hard to feel satisfied as well particularly after watching Johnny performing them. LolOctober 24, 2015 at 11:44 pm #27179Yes, dont know the correct term in English. And the first G# in the altissimo part if somebody else reading this.
October 24, 2015 at 12:16 pm #27167Hi again Johnny!
Have to admit that my altissimo playing is not 100% stabil and after D just luck. Lol
However, think I’ve tryed out all possible finguring for the ones I know up to D but
from there on to actually control a “split”, feels far away.
Is that something you achieve with the tongue or is there any other good tip you would
like to advice? In my world a altissimo tone with a split could really make that extra
effect in a solo.
Perhaps an option course to the previus altissimo course or perhaps a few privat lessons?Regards/Bengt
