Awesome Mel π For me, it’s been a huge help here in the south. With our humidity, Cane reeds can play different from 1 day to the next, but the added sound you get from Cane reeds makes the little bit of extra work with it–I think it does anyway LOL–Like anything else, the more you learn about how to use the Reed Geek properly the better the…[Read more]

Has anyone tried the new Fiber Reeds? How do they compare to a cane reed? I stopped by one of our local music shops who is a dealer for Legere reed yesterday and saw the Legere Signature Synthetic Reeds. There’s lots of great reviews for this reeds and the shop spoke very highly of them too. They had a few sitting on the side and let me try them…[Read more]

There’s a lot of Jazz playing I love and the instructor I worked with here locally really got me hooked into playing it. When it comes to Improvising in Jazz, the approach we take is a ‘chord-by-chord’ approach. Just 1 example–The typical Blues scales is minor in nature because a Blues Scale is just a minor pentatonic scale with an added flat 5…[Read more]

Couldn’t have said it any better Jak! Besides the attitude, here locally with some of these folks who play Jazz it’s also a case where some of these guys are better in their own heads than what they really are if you get my meaning. I’ve seen Michael Eubanks play and I work with his wife–I shared his info above–and I actually feel that he’s a…[Read more]

Oh wow!!! Sorry to hear about that Johnny…man. After having an experience like that, I don’t blame you for feeling that way. I certainly would! Wow, what a low! Sorry if I brought up any bad vibes or anything–that certainly wasn’t my intent, wouldn’t have asked if I had known. That type of attitude is exactly what has kept me from getting…[Read more]

Hey Johnny,
With all of the awesome musicians you’ve met, was curious if you/anyone you know ever met George Thorogood? That is one guy I would have loved to have met. Check out these licks/riffs that he and a friend of his are putting out live “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer”….the blues is where it’s at π

Been looking for it for awhile, it was on Amazon–here’s the link below. Good, good stuff Johnny π I’m hearing lots of licks/riffs I can recycle and use in my own playing. That’s a cool cover of ‘Walk Right In’ you guys did; I must have listened to Bill Harvey’s version about 100 times over the last few months LOL Wish you had a backing track for…[Read more]

For sure it was a great find π I’ve been looking for it and couldn’t find it. We can buy Johnny’s other albums on CDbaby.com, but this album is not available–not sure why. I was talking about ‘Walk Right In’ that Johnny and his band released for this album, here’s Bill Harvey’s version–I’m not sure if Bill Harvey is the original artist for this…[Read more]

Keep up the great work Jazz Cat, you do such a great job with your video edits…man, you put a lot of work into your videos! That’s very cool π I have a Sax version of that song too and will upload it as soon as I can, it’s all on the Saxophone. Great fun Ken–you took us right into those city lights π The guys with ZZ Top would say that you’re a ‘sharp dressed man’ too, very cool π Focus on keeping your oral cavity a little bit more open when you’re playing, will really open up your sound. A cool thing you can do with your articulation is to ‘Bebop’ it, accent a note and ‘ghost’…[Read more]

The place you see in the pics below is of a restaurant that is opening downtown in a few weeks. The owner is the older woman in the middle of the picture with everyone else who goes by the name of ‘Gi-Gi- and performed as a vocalist from the 1940s-1960s with some big names; she’s very ‘low-key’ about the people she has performed with. Update on my Selmer Signet: I took it to the shop today. There’s 5 pads that need replacing, the upper body of the sax was a little out of alignment & the key holder that the neck strap attaches to needed to be replaced, which he said is nothing out of the norm for a Sax from 1965 and overall it was in great shape. I bought it from the original…[Read more]

I couldn’t resist from getting picking up this Sax: 1965 Selmer Signet, specifically a Buescher-model π These model of Selmers are becoming VERY hard to find but were quite popular back in the day. I found a good deal on it and I jumped on it. I play tested it and the Bell is very broad, help projects a very deep/full sound. Subtones are…[Read more]
