Does anyone here like to hear David Sanborn’s Sax playing? Talk about a fantastic Alto Sax player! Yes, the Alto is way, way cool π Here’s one of my favorite David Sanborn song “Maputo”. On a side note, here’s a great article Johnny composed for his blog a few years ago about the Alto Sax. Some of the best all time Sax music is on the Alto :)…[Read more]

@ William–Please be safe! My wife and I are thinking about you guys–please keep us posted.
@ Pete–I’ve never heard of those MPs, where are they made at? Good job on your playing, keep up the great work. -

Nice one Peter–good articulation π I’m glad Sxpoet reposted this because would have never found it. Like Sxpoet was saying, make a separate post for it here in the Member’s videos and then we can find it. I love that song, so glad Johnny is releasing these Timeless Classics too. What Saxophone, MP/reed do you prefer to use? Thanks so much for sharing!

Tried posting a comment here and the computer system didn’t show it up. I was just saying about a year ago I saw a live demo of the Klangbogen and it was pretty amazing. Could definately hear a difference with v.s. without it. The projection/tone was much more focused and bright. It’s said to help stabilize the Sax at the tenon/neck area and from…[Read more]

Good thinking Mel–About 6 months or so ago I had to take similar steps to protect my cane reeds. I live here in the South and the humidity is a constant problem and it can really affect my cane reeds. I started using the D’Addario Reed Storage case that holds humidifier packs and it does an awesome job of protecting my reeds–they stay moist and…[Read more]

I remember reading something along those lines about King Curtis too. I listen to King Curtis all the time and there are songs of his that definately have an Illinois Jacquet type of style to them. I just wish I could have seen those guys live in Concert. About a year ago I spoke to an older gentlemen here whose a guitar player and we were talking…[Read more]

Illinois Jacquet put out some great, great stuff for sure. I love listening to these guys and try to pick up on the things they do/use that in our own playing. Illinois Jacquet used lots of those 1 note riffs/licks, goes to show that solos don’t have to be complicated to sound great! Big Jay Mcneely used a lot of 1 note licks/riffs too. I was…[Read more]

I love Illinois Jacquet playing. I love the solo in this song, great R&B solo on Tenor Sax. Very cool how he used lots of ‘1 note licks/riffs’ in his solos π -

Hi Johnny,
Is the backing track that you used in your lesson for Pentatonic Scales part 2 available for download? It’s not showing on my browser–Google Chrome. Wonder if I need to install Windows Flash Player? It’s weird because the backing track for lesson 1 downloaded fine, but for lesson 2 it’s not showing anything. Thanks :)…[Read more] -

Very cool William π Altissimo G is the hardest note in all of Saxophone to play consistently. Alt G# is a pain too LOL Once you get passed those 2 notes then it becomes relatively easy. If you can hear those notes in your head then you can play them. Don’t you just love Johnny’s Altissimo course? π

Never knew King Curtis did a cover of that song. I checked it out; you made the right call there for sure about doing it in Ray Charles’ version, much more ‘groovy’ than King Curtis’ version. It’s not too often that we hear a cover of some song that King Curtis did v.s. someone else did a cover of the same song that was better.…[Read more]

Got the e-mail, thank you William π Very cool for the Saxophone, would be great on either Alto or Tenor. On the MP3 that you sent me with the Tenor Sax playing, was that you?!? You sound really, really good! Very solid sound–nice, warm, open, clean tone. Great articulation too. Very, very cool.

Hi William–do you have the backing track/sheet music for this upload you did on your Vimeo channel? I’m fluent in Spanish (Castilian Spanish) and I’ll be working on building my repertoire up with Latin music very soon, been so heavy into the blues that I have overlooked Latin music–shame on me. My ears are hearing a good Tenor Sax tune–very bluesy π Karaoke actually has a decent track for the version of this great song with it’s custom features, so I can play my own Sax solo v.s. a guitar solo, etc.. -

That’s really cool William π I used the live in New Mexico, that video takes me back there. Some of Clint Eastwood’s Westerns were filmed in New Mexico and I’m a big fan of his western movies. Thanks for sharing π

The Reed Geek is NOT just another gimmick. There are so many things that you can do with the Reed Geek that you can’t do with sand paper, a nail file, . I’m not blasting those things, of course not. Have you ever tried a Reed Geek before? That video I shared above is by no means the only thing you do with a Reed Geek…no way. Different strokes…[Read more]
