Oh man, that’s awesome to know. I’ve had a really good ‘feeling, intuition, etc.’ about that particular MP every since Nadir released it. I had planned on getting it, just never got around to it/when everything happened to me. I don’t get along with metal MPs that well. Everyone whose heard me play on metal vs ebonite MPs says I sound much better…[Read more]

Hi Johnny,
Does the Winslow ligature you using for your standard MBI fit the Carbon Fiber Guardala for Tenor? (It looks like you’re using the Winslow in Besame Mucho). We’re you using the Carbon Fiber Reed with Carbon Fiber Guardala in the video? Nice, full, fat sound here π

Hey Johnny,
Your Sax cover to Misty was outstanding! I love how you played those King Curtis Sax lines in there, added so much color to the song.
One of the things I’ve always loved about King Curtis (one of my favorite all-time Sax players) is his tone and how versatile he was–playing ballads one moment and then playing high-screaming…[Read more]

Sounds good. My wife and I are also still looking for the folder here around the house too. I’m more so kicking myself in the butt because I was positive I put it with my other folders. I’m checking with my kids to see if they accidentally picked it up too. The good thing about how we re-arranged our room/house is that I have more space to add to…[Read more]

Hi Johnny,
A few months ago my wife and I did some re-arranging in our house. I’m setting up my Saxophone ‘wall of fame’ up in a different part of the house this week and I can’t find where I put your pic anywhere here in the house, along with a couple of other pics–1 of them is of King Curtis. I feel really embarrassed & stupid to be posting…[Read more]

Oh man, that sounds awesome π I think some of the best songs for Saxophone instrumentals are the ones that already have a Sax solo in it, like Born to Run. Another one I love is Billy Joel’s song ‘Still Rock and Roll to Me’ has a great solo that uses simple notes too π

The one thing my recovery has forced me to do is to take notice of things in a different way because I’m forced to take a step back and revisit these steps. Mentally, I’ve never forgotten anything–my mind is still sharp with basic music theory, scales, hearing Altissimo notes in my head, blues riffs/licks, etc.. It’s the other things regarding…[Read more]

Hey Johnny,
Really enjoyed your tutorial of Born to Run. I’m not working on that right now, but I couldn’t help myself to see the other Sax Goodies π I also love this Sax Solo by Clarence Clemons on Bruce’s song ‘Ramrod’ π

Hey Johnny,
Really enjoy the lessons you included in the Daily Practice Routine/Complete Beginner’s Guide–this is EXACTLY what I need/doing to ‘reboot’ my air support, embouchure, tone, etc.. I haven’t played the Sax in almost 2 years because of recovering from Oral Surgery, so I’ll be taking my time through these lessons for the next few…[Read more]

I love this Sax solo from “It’s Still Rock and Roll To Me”. Listen how he’s only using a handful of notes and how he’s playing them vs. just playing notes from a page–exactly as Johnny has always told us. I think this song would make a fantastic Sax Instrumental.

Oh cool, will check that out for sure. I love Red Prysock π I had never heard of Sil Austin before, didn’t know who he was. Have been listening to his technique, etc., awesome stuff.

Check out Sil Austin’s song ‘Everything Shakin’. I love his tone–big, raw, edgy sound π I’ve been reading some background info. about him–he produced over 30 albums in his Sax playing career, pretty amazing.

Those are awesome points and I’m thinking along the same line of ‘what in the world would the great Sax players say about it?’ The Sax instructor I worked with locally didn’t even hesitate or blink about the Selmer Mark 6, calling it the ‘King’ of the Tenor Saxophones. He doesn’t own one but said he has played one and even called it a ‘privilege’.…[Read more]

Hi Johnny,
Our music shop was open today, stopped by to pick up some Java Greens 2.5 reeds. We got into the subject of different Saxophones and I brought up the Selmer Mark 6–it’s every Sax player’s dream to have one π The guy behind the counter, who also claims to have experience as a Sax repairman, told me the Selmer Mark 6 is an overrated Sax…[Read more] -

Oh cool! I heard the right key then, alright π Yeah, I heard a few of those key centers too and it made me question what I was hearing a little bit–some tricky stuff there, like a Harmonic or Melodic minor? Hi Johnny,
I was listening to Herb Alpert’s famous song ‘Rise’ he played on Trumpet. I was testing the song against my wife’s organ, and it sounds like the song is in F minor?
