Nice video Johnny! Very cool π I’ve always thought Steve Wonder’s song of “Isn’t She Lovely” would make a great Saxophone cover. The place where the Harmonica is playing would be great for Sax Improvisation too. Your website has come a long way for sure, have always loved your content/instruction π

Hey Johnny–yes, that song ‘Last Date’ was really nice on the Saxophone π I had never heard of that song, really cool of you to make a Sax cover for it–well suited for the Saxophone π I love the sound you get with the Guardala Carbon Fiber MP and the reed to go with it; nice, fat, full sound.

Nice to have you here Zachary! π Hope you find Johnny’s site to be a great source of inspiration in your playing. I just started playing again about 6 weeks or so ago, wasn’t able to play for a couple of years due to an Oral Cavity disorder I had/needed medical help to fix. It feels great to be playing again. I’m in the process of rebooting my…[Read more]

That’s my problem–overthinking it. My Sax instructor I’ve worked with (we start resuming lessons again on Wed., March 20th) told me the same thing you just did–I think about it too much. He feels like I know my scales and I needed to stop thinking about it and ‘let it happen’. I talked to him yesterday and he said we’ll be working on some…[Read more]

Before my Oral Cavity ordeal (doing great now), I became a member of the Blues Society here–was a member for a couple of months before my ordeal happened. Being around those guys was the first time in my life I’ve ever been around live musicians…..and it literally felt like learning a new language of sorts, for the exact reasons you mention LOL…[Read more]

That just makes everything so much easier π So, if the other musicians are talking to me about a flat 3, flat 7, etc.. it doesn’t matter what the scale is. Based on these intervals, I’ll know exactly what note they’re talking about and can transpose it/play it to any key…..very cool π

Hi Johnny,
I started working on reviewing your licks in the Killer Blues course (one of my favorite courses of you have). When working on these licks in each Blues Scale, (one at a time) it seems like it’s much easier to simply know the pattern vs trying to ‘memorize’ the individual notes of these licks in each scale? An example is for lick one…[Read more]

I think this is one of the greatest Sax solos of all time π I was checking out Pink Floyd’s Sax player ‘Richard Parry’. The guy played some pretty amazing Sax solos to say the least. In this solo of ‘Money’, sounds like the notes he’s using is Pentatonics?

If there’s one player who’s playing/tone gets me in a good mood, it’s Sam Butera. Listen to this guy’s tone! Unbelievable π I was reading about Johnny’s experience of watching him up close and personal in Switzerland….what an experience that must have been π

@ Johnny–Oh yeah, it is in C minor, my bad π Been working really hard on being able to hear a scale and know what key they’re playing in, hasn’t been so easy to do–it’s slowly getting better. From what I’ve been told, it takes many years to have your ears developed to a point where you can hear what someone is playing and know what scale…[Read more]

Hey Johnny,
I was listening to Grover Washington’s ‘Mister Magic’; seems like this would be the perfect song to apply with your lessons from the Major Scale Course of Improvising with Modes over the chord changes? When I listen to this song, I think I’m hearing the key of F minor? I tested it against my wife’s organ and that’s the key it sounds…[Read more]

Hey Johnny,
The exercise of using the MP only is really helping me to get my tone back! In today’s practice session, I played an entire chromatic scale in C, as well as Arpeggios and playing a C Note in the lowest register all the way up to Altissimo with the MP only, so definitely starting to feel good π I’ve noticed when I really push the air…[Read more]

Yeah, I had see your Major Chord Improv. course there/had purchased when it first came out. Hi Johnny,
I had a question about Improvising over Chord Changes. If I’m playing in a Major Scale and I’m Improvising over a Major Chord, it’s a no-brainer to use the Major Pentatonic Scale over Major Chords. But what about Improvising over a Minor Chord, like the 2nd, 3rd or the 6th of the scale? Could I use a minor pentatonic scale over those…[Read more]

Anyone remember ‘Eddie and the Cruisers’ from the 1980s? Here’s a fantastic Sax solo from their song ‘On The Dark Side’. Keep hearing the same thing in all of these great solos–Penatonics, handful of notes, embellishments, etc π I think sometimes we tend to wanna complicate things in our Improvising. Seems like keeping it simple is always a…[Read more]

Hey William–I knew about the size of Jody Jazz tips openings, but don’t know what the tip openings are for Carbon Fiber Guardalas. The Jody Jazz line of MPs are very versatile. Have you tried any of the Guardalas with Cane reeds?
