Keep at it Bro. Cavefish–that note in particular is probably the hardest note in all of Sax playing to consistently hit. If it was easy then everyone would be doing it. Good for you to want to take on the Altissimo range πŸ™‚ There are literally thousands of Sax players out there who will actually refuse to play in this range, some of who have many…[Read more]

The key to playing in the Altissimo range is developing the technique that allows you to play in this range–all of the lessons that Johnny teaches in the Altissimo course prior to learning any of the fingerings are an absolute must. Without having developed the proper technique, we will never have true control/mastery of playing in the Altissimo…[Read more]

There’s a variety of things that could be preventing us from hitting the note. How are you doing with the Overtone series? Those lessons are really important. Keep your neck in a nice/upright/relaxed position and avoid shrugging your shoulders–shrugging your shoulders is often a sign of poor air support from your lungs. Sometimes we could just be…[Read more]

  • That’s good, good stuff for sure and I prefer it way more than today’s modern hip-hop, etc.. I just thought it was a good example of what Johnny has always taught about good Sax solos–some of the best solos out there are played with a handful of notes. Here’s a couple of other songs from Wilson Pickett that I really like–his music is awesome!…[Read more]

  • Is this great or what guys? πŸ™‚ I think just about anything from Wilson Pickett would sound great on the Saxophone. When we listen to this solo, we only hear a handful of notes…man this is good stuff πŸ™‚

  • You nailed that solo Aminn–very, very cool πŸ™‚

  • Nice talking to you Peter πŸ™‚ Over the past few months I’ve been very busy getting a new business going–I worked as a pro-level fly fishing guide for many years and I now have a contract with our state fisheries dept. to do classes with people on fly fishing for bass, panfish, trout, etc.. It feels really great getting that going here in the…[Read more]

  • Hey guys,
I’ve been wanting for to get a back-up Sax to my Trevor James SR Tenor, have had a couple of close calls with my Trevor James getting knocked off the stand, etc. I did have a Selmer Bundy Tenor and loved it but was forced to sell it to raise $ for my Trevor James. I have no hesitations in getting another Selmer Bundy to use as a back up…[Read more]

  • Sounds great. If you found that the medium fiber reed worked best for you then probably medium-soft would be best for me. I always play on a 2.5 medium cane reed. Yeah, I thought I had read a post somewhere a few weeks back about there being some kind of a hold up on the reeds. When ever you hear an update can you make some kind of a post on it…[Read more]

  • I have actually thought about the MBI–it’s a few hundred dollars more, but it could be worth it. That’s what I was talking about above with the MBI being more of an all-around type of MP. The Carbon Fiber model I would use for more indoor/intimate settings. To raise $ for these MPs my wife and I are listing loads of stuff on ebay over this…[Read more]

@ Johnny–I don’t blame Greg Piccolo for lovin’ Red Prysock so much! I’ve been wanting to have a few custom backing tracks made for his music through the folks that I use–they do GREAT work. I wanted to get 1 made for this song of his below “Charleston Twist” πŸ™‚

  • Hey Johnny,
When you did the review of the Fiber Reeds, was the Hemp reel the 1 that felt the most like a Cane Reed? Sure sounds like it–I’ve seriously considered looking into Synthetic Reeds but haven’t yet come across 1 that helps to project a ‘warm’ sound like a Cane reed does. Here in the South with our humid, wild climate; Cane reeds can…[Read more]

  • Hi Johnny,
For your own personal playing, are you using the Guardala Michael Brecker model or Fatboy for your playing? It seems like the Fatboy has a fuller projection to it v.s. the Michael Brecker model that has more of an ‘all-around’ type of sound? That’s what my ears hear anyway. I plan on getting 1 of the metal Guardalas and the 1 of the…[Read more]

  • The players from this era had an element in their playing that we just don’t hear very often anymore! The thing I love about Lee Allen’s playing is how simple he kept his licks/riffs. I’m waiting for the day that Johnny makes a Sax cover of this one available to buy here on his site πŸ™‚

Good points there Jak–I don’t know about me being a fine player LOL I do have fun though and that’s what it’s all about πŸ™‚ I haven’t gotten around to learning Honky Tonk yet but it’s on my to-do list. I’m one of those people who struggles with the flutter tongue, it’s really tricky to pull off. I have no problems growling but with Honky Tonk…[Read more]

Yes, it’s all good for me πŸ™‚ I’ve been involved with things here and have been so, so busy..didn’t realize it was going to be this busy. I haven’t even gotten around to getting Johnny’s new releases of the Chicken Shack, Honeydripper, etc.. I’ve got the Guardala Carbon Fatboy on my list and will be getting it as soon as I can, probably won’t…[Read more]
