hey Jake, right on thanks!
I got the Durga 2-3 years ago cause heard a lot of good things. ya I like it. it hasn’t replaced my Guardalas but I did some live shows a couple weeks ago and did something to my MBI and just haven’t had the time to fix it yet. I slapped the durga on and it’s been on ever since. with the right reed it’s pretty good…[Read more] -
john replied to the topic 12/8 time in the forum Music Theory 3 years, 1 month ago
when you’re comfortable reading compound time the goal is still to count in 4.
each group of 3 8th notes is a quarter beat.
if we were to write the song out in 4/4 almost every beat would be a triplet and that would be silly so hence compound time.
the triplet feel is constant but we can (and should) still count in 4/4 -
john replied to the topic 12/8 time in the forum Music Theory 3 years, 1 month ago
ultimately you want to count a 12/8 bar in 4; 1,2,3,4
so there’s 3 counts before the first note is played; 1,2,3 so-this-is-xmas -
john replied to the topic 12/8 time in the forum Music Theory 3 years, 1 month ago
as for counting the last beat of the 1st bar which has an 8th with a 16th then a dotted 8th…it’s hard to explain in writing so just listen to how the lyric goes;
“so this-is xmas” the word “so” gets the 1st 8th note, the word “this” gets the 16th note, and the word “is” gets the dotted 8th.now if you listen to how I played it or listen to…[Read more]

The half dotted quarter note rest at the very beginning has a value of 6 8th notes;
because the half note is worth 2 quarter beats and the dot adds another one. this equals 6.
That’s half the bar right there; counting in 8’s would be 123456 or counting in quarters would be 1,2 which is half the bar.
the 2nd half following it also has the same…[Read more] -

Hi Carl, sounds really crazy! No idea why this is happening to you….never heard of such a thing happening to anyone else but I’d like to figure out the issue…
when you say “click on the backling track button” do you mean within the download link? please be as specific as you can as I can’r see exactly what you’re doing. -

yes that’s the one I went thru years ago. I didn’t go thru the advanced one, didn’t need it for what I do…it’s got some really crazy music that only the top readers can get thru.
you’ll be doing great by getting thru this one tho so good on ya! -
john replied to the topic Sax Rot in the forum Saxophone Tips 3 years, 1 month ago
that’s great. the more tricky syncopated string of notes is the real problem for most of us and that’s what slows you down.
But, I find that there’s really only a certain number of combinations and so taking these one at a time can slowly help anyone “overcome” this.
When I used to practice a more advance piece I’s get stuck at several bars so…[Read more] -
john replied to the topic Key of A vs key of F# minor in the forum Music Theory 3 years, 2 months ago
a few ways to tell a minor key apart from a major is when you look at the score go directly to the last bar. more often than not it will end on the one. in this music it’s an A so there’s your first clue.
the other thing we can do is check for four chords and five chords throughout because every song will have these chords.
so in the key of A…[Read more]

every key has a relative major/minor which has the same number of sharps/flats.
a key signature that shows 3 sharps can be in either A major or F# minor.
you’re confusing this song to be in the minor key of F# minor, it isn’t. It’s in A major. Tenor key is what I’m referring to. -

nice leo, good energy.
your timing is usually very good but sometimes you can go off a bit which is pretty easy to do….
what I do is tap my foot most of the time especially when a harder part comes up.
so when you practice zero in on the track (mostly drums) and tap your foot to keep in time with the band…otherwise great effort. -

you just go to your channel, then your video section and you’ll see all your videos showing in a row. when you hover your mouse over one you’ll see 3 little dots to the right, click one and then you’ll see an option the says “delete forever”

ya great memories…Gregg was a blast to play with and hang out with. he inspired me a lot. he had rubber bands on his sax keys and rods to get the right amount of tension which I had never seen before.

I usually use the bis key fingering except when there is a B natural following the Bb otherwise that move would be too slow and awkward
