Harlem Nocturne Saxophone Music
(Earl Hagen and Dick Rogers)
Watch video to hear Johnny’s instrumental sax version:
Harlem Nocturne Saxophone Music
This classic instrumental is synonymous with the saxophone. A beautiful haunting and romantic melody that fits the sax perfectly, as it should since it was written as a tribute to the famous Duke Ellington Band alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges.
Written and first recorded in 1939. It has been recorded by too many musicians to list here but it just may be one of the most recorded instrumentals of all time.
One of the most popular versions was by the early rock instrumental group The Viscounts who originally released this tune in 1959 and then again in 1966. Although the arrangement and key is different from the Viscount version the groove and feel is very close to their recording.
This version of Harlem Nocturne saxophone music is transcribed in the key of C minor. This makes it D minor for the B flat saxophone and the key of A minor for the E flat saxophones.
