You thoughts on buying a sax before playing it?

I’m looking at buying a new tenor sax right now and I want to go big with this one.

As it’s such a big purchase I really don’t want to make the wrong decision.

It’s easy to buy saxophones online but is it the best bet? Are you better off actually going and physically playing the horn and then buying it or can you feel safe in just buying one?

It’s got to be a personal decision. I would feel ok buying online as long as I had played the exact same model already, then you know you like it and if it’s got a repair or 2 it’s not a big deal cause you can get it fixed. If you have a music store where you can try out a few that would be best… unless of course someone is so new that they haven’t even played a sax yet then I would recommend a few of the well-known brands.

Aye, it’s a Selmer and I’d be buying new so I wouldn’t be worrying about repairs etc.

So you would definitely recommend having a go on one before buying one?

A Selmer, yes of course. They didn’t make a bad one yet. I own 2 Selmers, a Mark 6 and a 7. I prefer the 6. What model is it you’re looking at?
