while messing about i noticed that when i played in the middle register – while playing notes if you stick your tongue out and rub the reed in and out with the top surface of your tongue – the reed really stings the surface of the tongue but i could have sworn it sound a lot more like a cello, and if you move your tongue slowly backwards and forwards it sounds vaguely like the bow moving across the cello? And then i was browsing an old sax book and it says it can sometimes be close to cello, clarinet and oboe sounds! the range of the sax is amazing. But looking back i did actually see a concert sax player make one sound very close to a voilin in the middle and upper registers!
