Ya, sounds like a reasonable analogy.
Mmmm, perhaps you are over analising this a bit. The tuning track I referred to earlier has the A440 but it also has other 2 lower octave “A ” tones each an octave apart. I set up to the A440 and then check against the next octave “A ” which is lower so in fact I am checking to see if my horn is in tune in 2 octaves which basically is the normal range of the horn and it works really great, well, then again, I play a Cannonball, great horn, highly recomended. I hope you come right with your tuning. You raised some points to take note of, thanks for sharing.

reghite- exactly correct the 2 octave check
is what my instructor (pro) does & taught
me to do before we play a duet.
Likewise the piano player that has
accompanied me does exactly the same
on the piani before we play together.
Like Johnny conveys – if you do the
A440 check etc that he demo’s.. most of
the sax keys will be in tune and any
keys that are slightly out won’t be too
noticeable to most listeners.
One other thing to add – if you can’t
be bothered to tune up every day
because you feel you are only
playing to yourself, then you are
cheating yourself (imho).
By being in tune everyday, your
mind gets used to hearing what
a specific key should sound like
in tune and how a scale sounds
like when your sax is in tune.
This is why people like Johnny
can tell straight away when a key
sounds too flat or too sharp, due
to the amount of practing they
spend every day while in tune.
Hey Johnny, good to see you are producing new tunes again after a long absence. I like your version of Sway and Urgent takes me back to the 80’s when the Saxophone played a major role in quite a number of songs those days.
I have a question: I currently have 17 reeds that I bought more than a year ago, I look after them really well and rotate them daily and use for minimum of 1 hour at a time. How do I know when I need to replace them.
Should I just replace them after a year mandatory or are there certain symptoms I need to look out for that will indicate to me that I need to replace them. It can be rather tricky for those of us playing on our own because at the same time our tone is busy developing and one can quite easily be miss led into believing so while in the meantime our reeds are busy degrading.
Hope you can shed some light on this.
Best regards
Reg
