My teacher always has me blow long tones loud to soft and soft to loud. Then he asks me to play as soft as I can and hold it. This enabled me to play the soft sub tones. Loose bottom lip for airy sound and more lip to play a solid tone. The hard part at first was to provide the constant air flow on the soft tones. It still feels like I am going to run out of air when I play them.
I believe some players actually are moving their bottom lip down and up getting that vibrating sound. I found that this automatically happens to me when my mouth gets tired. 🙂
