Used at the right time this can be an entertaining effect.
The technique is illustrated on many Youtube videos….but not on an open mouthpiece with hardish reeds.
Is it possible with this sort of set-up?

It’s a technique I’ haven’t learned yet so I can’t help there. Maybe I’ll try to learn it one day…I do love the effect and agree it can be a really good effect.

It helps with a bigger sax (Obviously). If you’re on a bari, you can get it to come out loud and proud with any setup (I have a hard rubber otto link with medium reeds) its fine. I’ve noticed that on tenor and up that I can’t make it as effective as on the bari, but it will still come out fine and make that pop when you need it to. It will sound different depending on what setup you have, but you just gotta practice with it and make it work.

            Thanks….I will persevere.
My usual set-up is an M9 Metalite (tip opening 0.115″) with No. 3 Fibracell reed.
On the basis that the tongue is a muscle which has to be exercised, I am practicing with a much smaller tip & a softer reed….now the slap tongue is more consistent.
Hopefully I can work up to the point where it is possible (and easy) for me on my usual set-up.
