Here is a comparison recording between my Selmer hard rubber S80 C** and my Selmer metal C*
The S80 is played with a #2 Java reed, and the Silver C* is played with a #1 Java reed.

My playing isn’t good, but it will give one a good idea of the difference in tone.
Each comparison section is separated by a short tone, first the S80 then Silver C*.

generally speaking I like the C* but why not use the same reed? actually since the C* has a smaller tip opening you should try reversing the reeds at least… right?

Try the metal with a slightly stronger reed.

Thanks for the comments on the MP’s. Yesterday was a very hot day for us and I really battled to make a recording with the metal MP which had a minimum of squeaks. I did try the metal MP with the same reed first, but it was just one long series of shrill squeaks. I had the same issue when I first started playing the alto and had to begin with a #1 on the plastic 4C just to sound semi-decent. I will see if I can find a #1.5 reed somewhere and try that. The sound files don’t really illustrate how bright and accurate the metal is, I’m really looking forward to being able to play it properly, because it give’s such sensitive control of the volume and tone. Cheers

              Hi Jeff,
out of sheer lazyness, i just use my i-touch to record the sax ( i should use my audio interface & proper Mic more often with the logic pro software).

The problem i have with using my i-touch, by placing it in different positions in relation to the sax, it does change the quality of the recorded tone, affect the loudness of the sax in relation to the backing track etc.. ( i’ve had comments – you need to play louder, when in fact the i-touch should have been better positioned, too close and the recording is too loud and starts to distort). It’s okay for general recording, but not for performance showcase recording.

              Keep on uploading!!!

                  Welcome.

Our second generation of Marc Jean Ligatures have been improved in many ways. The sound enlargement generated by the very thick piece of grenadilla wood (clarinet wood) replacing the 2 wooden sticks is phenomenal.

The amplification of natural harmonics is comparable to the use of a double reed.

On the new Marc Jean ligature II, the piece of grenadilla wood is
adding 60 % of mass to your reed multiplying the reflection of the
tone and harmonics by as much.

The new ligature model was designed to enable the reed to vibrate
even more freely. As a result, there is less resistance when blowing
into the instrument and less air is required to produce the sound.
Low notes can be played effortlessly at a whisper and a larger,
                  richer

                        Hi Pete,
interesting, you’ll have to let everyone know what the new lig is like, in a separate topic.

i was a bit disappointed as i was genuinely expecting to read about some feedback from Jeff’s upload. Never mind its a free chat room as they say.
