Ronnie Milsap is well-known in the world of country music and he made good use of the Saxophone in his songs, which is rare in country music. I’ve learned his great song of “Lost in the Fifties tonight” on Tenor Sax. I have this one on my to-do list for the Alto Sax; I think it would make a great Alto Sax Instrumental 🙂
August 31, 2016 at 3:57 am #40600Never heard this guy. Great song Michael. Got a real James Taylor feel about that sound. Putting that one in the phone for sure.
September 5, 2016 at 5:06 pm #40897I would LOVE the music for Lost in the Fifties… And I agree this would also be a great sax song… Wish Johnny would do a few country tunes… And Dazza, you haven’t heard of Ronnie Milsap… That tells me a lot about your age, and demographic lol! I grew up on Ronnie, but I’m 48, and southern by the grace of God 😉
September 5, 2016 at 5:48 pm #40904probably cause Dazza is in Australia which I’ve never been but guessing there’s not a lot of American country music on the radio there?
September 5, 2016 at 5:53 pm #40905Wasn’t knocking Dazza by any means! I have relatives that live up north and I mentioned George Jones once and my cousin said, “Who?” I laughed aloud. If you live in the south and someone doesn’t know George Jones, Ronnie Milsap, Keith Whitley, Conway Twitty and others… Its like the rest of the world meeting someone who doesn’t know Elvis… LOL!
September 5, 2016 at 6:46 pm #40906@ Steve I have learned “Lost in the Fifties” as it was part of my series of uploads…it’s great fun on the Tenor 🙂 Will upload it as soon as possible. I’m on my way to making a full recovery from Oral Surgery and my post-surgery therapy runs until beginning of October and then I get re-evaluated. From there I’ll have a definately time table on things. I did get medical clearance to start my practice sessions and I started now in August…just taking it slow and easy with basic exercises. You would be amazed how much good Johnny’s exercises here on his home page has helped in my recovery, especially his “ehh ahh” exercise.
September 6, 2016 at 1:31 am #40919Yeh guys. There are so many great artists of yesteryear like Ronnie that we don’t hear of down under in Oz. Garth Brooks of course. And that other great singer Keith Urban. Oops he’s and Aussie. In fact I had the pleasure of going through school with him. Great singer and musician.
I am officially SAXLESS. Sold my Yani today for what I paid a year and a half ago. Test driving a new TJ Raw Tenor this weekend. Wow. Can’t wait.
September 6, 2016 at 9:56 am #40929AnonymousHi Dazza
I am surprised! I was told that the Yani’s were even better than Yamaha! Which model did you have, and which model TJ are you thinking of acquiring?
I recently experienced some of the joy you must have felt when you acquired your new MP. Sxpoet sent me his Selmer S80 C** ebonite MP. The difference in sound from plastic to ebonite is amazing. I’m really enjoying the improved feel and control. Upgading to a new and better sax must feel even better. Well at least you can still practice with the MP’s. CheersSeptember 6, 2016 at 3:42 pm #40936Hey Jeff. It was an early 80’s 990u. I thought it was fine until I had the chance to play a newer Yani recently and thought if I could get my money back (1800) on mine I would upgrade. So I listed for sale and I did. I am looking at the Raw but wondering if anyone has one , has played one or knows if the XS is different to it. Michael any offerings. It’s a lot more dough but if it is as good as people are saying then it will be my Sax for life!! Tell you next week.
September 6, 2016 at 4:08 pm #40937@ Dazza–I’ve never played the Tenor RAW or the RAW XS, so have no personal insights there other than just my own personal opinion. But just from the SR Tenor that I do own I can tell you that you would be in great hands with either one of those Tenors. Remember that the RAW and RAW XS are their Pro Model Saxophones, my SR Tenor is an Intermediate model–although it used to be classified as their pro model Tenor until they released the RAW and RAW XS, then it got bumped down to an Intermediate class…don’t let that fool you 🙂 Johnny lives close to Sandro Massullo, the owner of the North American Distributor of Trevor James Saxophones; not sure if Johnny has ever got a chance to contrast the RAW and RAW XS models. I know he used the RAW model for his Baker Street and Careless Whisper uploads, but it was the Alto. I have the same Signature Custom Alto model that Johnny covered in his review, but mine is the Gold Lacquered model and it was about $700 less than the RAW model…simply an outstanding Alto Sax. Can’t say enough about it. Bear in mind that just because something cost more doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s better. A lot of it would just come down to personal preference. Johnny posted his review of the RAW Trevor James Alto in the blog a couple years back, here’s the link to that post in the blog. It would be awesome if he could do a review on the Tenor Model sometime.
Between the RAW and RAW XS for both Alto and Tenor, they seem to be very similar and from the take of other pro players like Trevor James’ Endorser Andy Snizter and pro Sax player Steve Cole who is now endorsing Trevor James Saxophones (he’s talked about them on facebook and is on my friend list) it seems to come down to personal preferences. Ergonomically, both Saxophones are exactly identical. The only difference is that the RAW XS has polish added to the RAW dip and the RAW model is not polished at all. I personally wouldn’t see the justification in popping out an extra $1,000 for such minor differences.
