Hi Johnny,
I was curious if in 2016 there were going to be any new songs that you had plans on releasing? We know you’re a very busy guy, no rush or anything. Not sure what you have in mind, but I would definately say at some point in time a release or 2 from Little Richard would be ‘off the charts’ to say the least π Another one to think about I would cast my “vote” for is “Walking with Mr.Lee” by Lee Allen, awesome stuff! I was getting ready to start working on Hot Rod special as well as your 1950s collection, that stuff really hits so well with me π I also think the famous song of “The Stroll” by the Diamonds would turn some heads too. I think it was King Curtis who played the Sax for them…talk about a KILLING sound on that song π My personal feelings is that even in today’s modern world of music, I don’t think it compares to what those guys in that era did. I think it was a very special time in music to say the least…..yes, I know it’s a matter of having the time to do it π These are just some “food for thought” LOL
December 15, 2015 at 7:06 pm #29050Yes Michael, for sure. I want to do more and more. rock and roll, blues and some fave pop tunes too.
I have a few on the back burner and will start to lay em out in the new year.
thanks for your interest!Johnny
December 15, 2015 at 7:17 pm #29054cool..no rush, we know you’re busy. It’s amazing to see how, even to this day, folks don’t get tired of hearing all of those great songs played on the Saxophone. Those songs have withstood the test of time π
January 6, 2016 at 8:33 am #30422I have to chuckle on the American Bandstand Walking with Mr. Lee video. Knowing the size and lack of mobility of those old TV studio cameras, I kept wondering when it was going to run over the dancers!! Now that would have been a news story. π
January 6, 2016 at 12:06 pm #30462good idea for request list; I’d survey/ask to see demand before taking time to do since a lot of work
one I’d like is
“Play that Funky Music” -wild cherrygood idea to check youtube copyright/ok to post list first:
https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/ad_supported_musiceg unfortunately some I’d like can’t be posted on youtube due to copyright restrictions, like ‘Moondance’ etc
January 6, 2016 at 12:34 pm #30463Just noticed Hello Dolly is ready for release soon. Can’t wait to hear you play this one JF. Love the Earl Bostic version but will sound better on Tenor for sure. Great tune to kick the year off!
January 6, 2016 at 1:18 pm #30467Funky music, ya really love that one too…so many tunes, so little time!
Should be able to post Hello Dolly by the weekend, was a lot of fun and have wanted to play that one for sometime now and so thought I’d get more productive since it’s a new year! (I just love listening to Louis Armstrong sing it and so my version is very close to his)
Have several more after that, all quite different… an old classic British huge hit, a soulful/funky instrumental you’ll recognize, and another saxophone 50’s rock and roll tune that was one of the biggest instrumental sax tunes… that’s all the hints I will give!
oh, and I’ll use a soprano in one, maybe two so that will be quite different for me as I haven’t played soprano in well over 10 years.January 6, 2016 at 3:45 pm #30480That will be interesting to see you play the Soprano Sax and very cool too. All of the Saxophone are great. Did I read somewhere here on the forum that you’re borrowing a Soprano from someone right now? How has it been for you picking it up after not playing it for 10 years?
January 6, 2016 at 4:31 pm #30482yes Sandro from Massullo Music lent it to me.
I find the soprano more delicate. everything with embouchure and intonation is magnified so any slight change becomes very obvious.
it’s good in some ways and not so in others. when I need to slur down or fall off type of things it’s very easy because it’s so responsive.
I chose from a box of reeds that have been in my studio for over 10 years but a couple seemed ok.
If I stayed with soprano I would invest in a better mouthpiece but am just making do with what I have here at the moment.
the mouthpiece is a selmer metal short shank I believe, not very open but better than the other plastic one that’s available and Massullo Music didn’t have any soprano mp’s on hand. anyway you’ll hear it soon enough. I must admit I’ve missed it in some ways and just love the way it sounds and feels on certain things.January 6, 2016 at 5:56 pm #30483Funky Music yes I used to sing it back in the day! there are lots of old Average White Band songs that kick how bout Kool and the Gang James Brown like jazz cat said Moon dance kicks butt, how bout Bob Seger he’s a walking hit factory Kat mandu Old Time Rock and roll turn the page etc etc etc more Beatles Stones what else??
