This is a bit different, but anyone seen King Ralph (the film – John Goodman in it). Anyway, I was listening to rock n roll Little Richard and landed on the song Good Golly Miss Molly. Great song. Then on youtube ‘good golly miss molly – John Goodman’ comes up and thought it would be interesting to watch (I haven’t seen King Ralph, but he is a great actor). There is a short wacky sax solo I really like the sound of in there (1min 15), anyone know who the saxophonist who played the solo is? I had a go at transcribing but failed miserably, my ear isn’t great and my fingers are too slow (especially with that weird run up and down he does on the sax) :(. Thought’d I just share this to see what you thought of it?
Not recognizing the player but he’s just playing the blues in G (A tenor)
you can play the G major pentatonic which he does but also uses the Bb a lot, which is the minor 3rd.
the intro lick for his solo for example is just a series of 5 notes played up and down over and over…sounds more complicated than it really is:
D E G A Bb then back down Bb A G E D
most every other lick of his solo stays with this scale G A Bb C D E F which is a natural G minor scale
this is played over a major key slo you have the option of a major or minor 3rd, he went for the minor
(I’m doing this on piano so remember to transpose it up a tone for your tenor)
That’s pretty hilarious! 🙂 It’s also very cool, have never seen that before. Thanks for sharing–sounds like you’ve gotten the blues bug Khanthebrit, I don’t blame you one bit either. Johnny’s ability to transpose by ear is amazing–takes years to get to that level.
John Goodman was great with Little Richard’s 12 bar blues tune, “Good Golly Miss Molly”
IMDB lists actor Kirk St. James as the sax player (apparently not the actual player)
