Hello everybody, I am Willie from Delaware. I last played Tenor about 35 years ago before life got in the way. I am recently retired and came upon an Alto and said what hell let me give this a try. Just looking around for some tips. I know the Alto is probably a cheap one but if I like playing it I am prepared to spend some money on a good sax.

Hi Willie! I’m new to this site it’s very cool nice people on it excellent sharing of knowledge! get johnnies books on getting your chops back together. I like to mess around on alto myself, but consider myself to be a drummer. Start a practice routine stick to it
I “m pretty impressed by the videos that have been offered in the past few days! It’s a cool site!

It’s an Allora student model Alto AAAS-301. I will get something better if I like it.

That’s a fine sax for starting out and so worth keeping.
consider upgrading your mouthpiece possibly, reeds, and working on your embouchure and air support….these are the things that will further your progress.

Thanks Johnny, I got a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece and some Rico 2.5 reeds to start. I also got myself a decent neck strap. I’ll start working through some of your beginner sessions tomorrow.

Willie, if you have a hard time with your reeds or start getting sore lips after a short while i think it might be your reed strength because 2.5 can be a little high for beginners. if they feel ok great, I don’t know how much experience you have.

Thanks for all of the tips Johnny. I will get the sax checked out tomorrow to make sure it doesn’t have leaks. I’ll give the 2.5 reed a try but I’ll pick up something a little lighter when I am at the shop just in case. I played for about 5 years (I played tenor then). First in school, then in a small Jazz/Rock band (3 horns). That was a long, long time ago though. In my mind I kind of think I can still play a little but that is in my mind. lol
