This is a question for Johnny. When I was 9yrs old in 1959, my father tended bar where the Viscounts played every weekend here in New Jersey. I knew them all since I saw them play often. Since then I became obsessed with playing it on tenor just the way Harry Haller did it. It seems that there is no music written note for note the way he played it. Can you shed some light on this this Johnny?

That’s very cool that you had that great opportunity! Well, personally I copied him and many others in the way they played and that’s why I play the way I do. The Viscounts were a great band that were simply a product of their time. They had a small group of players that were really good and happened to be into instrumental music like the Ventures and others but they did stand out in many ways especially because of the sax. As for writing the music note for note, the notes themselves don’t tell the whole story, More of the way it was played, the attitude.

HALLER: I have a transcription of the Viscounts tune. It was done by Curtis Swift of saxsolos.com. You might check the site to see if is there? If not, give me an email and I can scan it for you and EM it. Tim
