HamidJuly 20, 2015 at 6:52 pm #22974Hamid, I have said this before somewhere on the forum, my favorite mp is the Guardala Michael Brecker but the only ones I’ve tried that would make me switch is the Theo Wanne’s. I think the one I tried was the Durga but all his mp’s are amazing. I would give them my highest recomendation and will say that when I do finally change from my MB it will be a Wanne.
August 4, 2015 at 11:14 pm #23663Dear johnny,
I’ve purchased a new mouthpiece last week. I’ve decided to change mp & tip openning from Guardala MBII .size 8 (.110″) into thewo wanne durga size 9 (.120″)My new mouthpiece has a powerful sound. But controlling its sound is too hard because it needs more air support.
Would you tell me which tip openning do you prefer and is better for the bluse & rock n roll?Yours,

HamidAugust 9, 2015 at 10:28 am #23805It’s very different for each of us and a very personal thing. My Guardala Brecker model was only made with one opening and I’m not sure what the number is but it is perfect for me. here’s some more information regarding these:
http://www.neffmusic.com/blog/2013/01/pms-guardala-michael-brecker-ii-tenor-mouthpiece/August 9, 2015 at 12:27 pm #23810Theo Wanne has a link on their site that shows tip openings for just about every MP we can think of for all Eb and Bb Saxophones. Here’s the link:
http://theowanne.com/knowledge/tip-opening-charts, click on any chart and it will download in pdf. format to your cpu. The MBII is shown on their charts to have a tip opening of .110″, which is weird because the Studio Model that I have played with is shown to have a tip opening of .120″, so I’m not sure how accurate this is…it may actually be the other way around because the Studio doesn’t have the projection/punch the the MBII has plus it has a medium-sized chamber. As Theo Wanne will tell us, there’s more than just the tip opening of an MP that we have to take into consideration when choosing an MP. For me, everything about Claude Lakeys suites me perfectly, the tip openings, chambers, baffles, everything. Like Johnny says, we’re all different. The local shop has ordered a good supply of Claude Lakey Apollos MPs and I’m going to get to try one soon 🙂 They’re made in both brass and aluminum.August 9, 2015 at 3:01 pm #23812Hi HAMID, I have a Theo Wanne Durga size 8, and a Theo Wanne Shiva metal size 8. The Durga or Shiva are both rock and roll loud. Competes with trumpets. My favorite is the Theo Wanne Ambika metal, size 7*. And coming in 2nd is the Gaia metal 7*. I like the ligatures that come with the mouthpieces.

thanks for your answer and telling about your experience. Also that information was so helpful.
August 10, 2015 at 10:05 pm #23860Dear Michael,
All the tips were functional, but I would appreciate if you tell me about your opinion and experience after trying Claude Lakey Apollos MPs ?
By the way thanks for all your explanations in details.August 11, 2015 at 8:06 am #23866Hi Hamid,
Here’s a couple of reviews on the Claude Lakey Apollos for you that I found online.
http://forum.saxontheweb.net/showthread.php?170946-Review-Claude-Lakey-Apollo-Brass-7*-Alto
http://www.doctorsax.biz/Lakey_Apollo_Brass_Tenor_7star.htmI actually got to try these yesterday because the local shop is a Claude Lakey dealer and the put them out on the shelves yesterday. They kept a couple behind the counter so that we can try them out….immensely powerful, rich and versatile. I got hooked on the Claude Lakeys after I tried them a couple months back because Johnny had did a quick review on them with the Trevor James Saxophones. The music shop knew I said I was sticking with Claude Lakeys and I told them to call me when the Apollos came in, and so they did LOL Claude Lakeys was the farthest thing from my mind, but the shop had them on display when I tried them for the first time a couple months back had the so I tried them. Everything about them was just right for me….bear in mind they were just right for me, we’re all different. You also need to bear in mind that with these line of MPs, most music shops have no return policy. The only ones I think who may have one is WWBW.
So with the Apollos, the construction of them are almost identical to the 6*, 7*, and 8*, etc.. but the only difference is that they are made out of different metals. In my mouth, they felt no different than the 7* and 8*, they were just as easy to play only they are very powerful and rich. They have big tip openings so that you get lots of edge, but have medium-sized chambers so that they’re not too difficult to play. I have a hard time playing MPs with small chambers. The Brass Models are a little bit “darker” so that one will go on my Alto because I don’t want it being too “bright” The Brass model gives the Alto an “full, sensual” sound…perfect for me. The Aluminum being a softer metal was slightly more “bright, focused” and that one will go on my Tenor because if I put the Brass on the Tenor, the intonation will be TOO dark….the Trevor James SR Tenor already has a very broad, spread sound and if I put a Brass MP on it, then it will come across as too dark. The Aluminum is better suited for my Tenor.
This was all my quick take on it, I played them for about 15 min. and will be picking them up now beginning of September…very excited 🙂 Bear in mind, no MP we buy does any good for our playing without things like a good ligature, the right reed,….and a GOOD TUNER! 🙂 -
