Hello all, my name is John Robel (johnnyreb) and I am new to having a sax not new to diggin’ it. I am 60, have played guitar, pedal steel, 5 string banjo, drums and stuff for most of the last 50 years. Finally took the big leap and bought a 52 Conn 10m. I am frothing at the mouth to get started playing filthy, kinky sax! YEP (Duane Eddy) is a perfect example of the sound I’m looking for. Sam Butera with Prima blows my mind! That version of Night Train is the hottest I think. I guess I owe Walt Disney for turning me on to Prima a long time ago. Anyhow, thought I would say Hello. Take care, John
February 10, 2016 at 9:49 pm #32459Hey John Wayne here. HA HA HA no JOHN my name is Wayne welcome to the blog!! I too play drums as well as sax, alto, you mentioned “played” do you mean not any more?? Whats a Conn 52 10m.?? Tenor ? Alto? I can’t tell if you’re being serious about playing filthy, kinky sax!! But if you are serious then you are in the right spot. Johnnie has just released some nice videos of Mercy Mercy Mercy Check them out , I’m not familiar with the players you mentioned I’ve heard of Duane Eddie but…… hey i know you know James Brown..
listen to his sax player he would say :MACEO BLOW YOUR HORN” Maceo Parker played with James Brown for a while I think?? Welcome!February 12, 2016 at 12:45 pm #32531Nice horn John… Wayne, 1952 is the year of the horn, 10m is the model, tenor, the alto version was a 6m.
John if you haven’t yet check out Butera’s Not New Orleans Nights… great CD… I met him years ago in Atlantic City, very nice guy and what an entertainer! Being the sax geek I am, I asked what mouthpiece he played…. he said and I quote ” A Berg Larsen something.” he played the same piece forever. I read somewhere it was a 130/0 and he played #5 Plasticover reeds.
February 12, 2016 at 3:20 pm #32550Hello Wayne, sorry it took a while to reply. When I said I have played, I should say I still do play all the toys in the house. It’s all old vintage stuff I’ve had for 40 years. I paid 100 bucks for my ’65 blackface twin reverb, I wish I could buy a mess of ’em for that price now. Here is Yep by the great Duane Eddy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXdwH5BZsDI and here is some Sam Butera with Louie Prima.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kTcjXhGbxU AND https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rV8HrpOu1FA Take care, John
February 12, 2016 at 5:13 pm #32553Thanks and Howdy Bill, Yeah Buddy Ole Sam was a killer player, arranger and
entertainer. While I enjoy, respect and am envious of the jazz guys chops,
it’s the “hell raisers” tone that knock me out most. The Butera and Jim
Horn wailers, and of course the seedy, smokey old jazz guys too. A Tom
Waits show takes you to the seedy side of New York or Chicago back in the
30’s. When you hear it described as nasty, dirty. filthy, kinky sax, you
know exactly what it is. .Take Care Man, JohnFebruary 13, 2016 at 8:27 pm #32625Hey John when you say a 65 black face twin reverb do you mean by Fender? I have a Gibson Saturn 2 Ga 45 rvt it’s old it’s got 2 12 inch speakers it’s 50 watts. How would I know how old a Martin alto is that I have? Do you guys want to freak out I had a martin alto silver outside gold inside and a C melody I can’t remember I thought it was a Martin as well, jazz Cat you might know I think you said you play C melody would you know?? But it went missing after a “Breakup ” with an old girlfriend! BUMMER!!

You can cover a lot of bases with a Tele and a Twin. I have played mostly country flavored stuff, rockabilly, boogie, country, country rock, the “hippie” country, bluegrass and western swing. (which is mostly jazz with fiddles instead of a horn section, I think) Commander Cody and The Lost Planet Airmen were, and still are, big influences. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdEgmtOcv6U. Take care John
