In white Christmas, when I listen to the video, which is awesome, you do some different things that are not written, correct?? Vinny
July 27, 2014 at 12:16 pm #12372yes, I often do embelishments as I learn the song.
July 28, 2014 at 9:22 am #12374I musta got lucky with my Hawk Chinese tenor. I have a 70’s vito tenor and when I play the 2 to compare I like the sound and ease of playing the Hawk gives over the Vito. I can get some of the altissimos on the Hawk whereas I can’t on the Vito. I’m sure if I put more time into the Vito that may be different.
I read a lot of reviews before purchasing it. It’s so hard to go purely by review, unless there are a lot of reviews and the are all negative, LOL. I have read that these saxes tend to play a little sharper in the upper registers though. Mine seems ok but am still pretty new experience wise. I am sure the more I learn and improve I can have a better review on it.
When I did get the sax tho, the low notes were horrible and the octave break from mid c# to mid d was screechy. I did take it to a sax shop and they tuned it up and it has been great ever since. I think I got this red tenor for $299. It did come with a money back guarantee so I took a chance. I am happy with the chance I took. This is the red tenor you see in my videos on the blog.July 28, 2014 at 9:51 am #12375ya, good you got lucky. 2 out of the 3 I tried weren’t playable but one was. was it awsome? no! but it played well enough as you can see in that video I did, and it would suffice any one staring out for a year or 2.
July 28, 2014 at 12:25 pm #12376That was my thought when I got it. September marks the 2 year mark for me and I know the sax is something I am sticking with so I am ready to make the investment! Just gotta find the right one for me. The hard part is there are so many to choose from and not having the capability of playing them first stinks. I am looking for local ones just haven’t found one yet.
This Hawk was a good choice for me to learn on and to be sure it was something I was going to stick with. I can def see the downside though. If 2 out of 3 are bad and it wouldn’t play, it can be hard for a new player to tell if it is the sax or the player. Every now and then we get lucky when we roll the dice HaHa.July 28, 2014 at 1:11 pm #12377Those of us who live in a decent size city that has a sax or any music shop with a repair department can be ok but that’s not everyone…
I got an email the other day from someone in India asking about a problem which I quickly could tell was a mechanical problem. Turns out it is a cheap Chinese sax and there is no music shop anywhere near where this guy lives so it’s a major problem now. And remember, even my sax guys refuses to touch the alto I brought to them because they were scared to break something, being so cheap and even if they wanted to replace the part they wouldn’t be able to order one.July 30, 2014 at 4:43 am #12387AnonymousIn looking at the (Alto) sheet music for Jingle Bell Rock there are several phrases that repeats throughout the melody. This is good news for me. I can take this in sections so it is not so intimidating to me. Also, I need to find exercises to build up my speed in order to play along with the backing track. This is awesome. Vinny
July 30, 2014 at 4:51 am #12388AnonymousI might just have a mini Concert for my family this Christmas on these three songs, and maybe more…. LOL
