I know everyones – bored with this, i’ve finaly narrowed my choice of mic’s down to one of the 3 mic’s below
http://www.shure.co.uk/products/microphones/beta_57a
http://www.shure.co.uk/products/microphones/sm57
http://www.shure.co.uk/products/microphones/pga81just can’t make up my mind!
pricewise – they tick the box
sax/acoustic guitar recording – they tick the box
small bedroom recording, carpeted, full of furniture with no echos – not sure of mic choice?
large double room with false wood floor, lots of spaces, furniture around the walls, good echoes in room – not sure of choice of mic?i want to record in either room, as most of my practice is in a dead room (bed room) but i do often practice in the large double room (not dead room) – could be i have to buy 2 mics?
Any comments would br welcome from people who have recorded in dead rooms and rooms with echoes.
October 29, 2015 at 6:25 am #27323AnonymousHi James, if I was choosing between these three I would go for the pga81 because it has a flatter frequency response and higher output mV.
Are you going to buy an external analog – digital convertor?
Apparently using the PC’s mic input on the soundcard is not advisable because of PC noise.
That’s one thing I like about my Android OS Lenovo A10 – it has zero noise.October 29, 2015 at 7:27 am #27324Sweetwater recommended that I get a Shure MV51 which I did buy. My ear phones plug into the mic and the mic connects to my mac book pro with a USB. The mic also has a volume-in control.

At the moment 1st of all want to sort out which mic is best for recording in a dead room & and a room with lots of echos,
using an apple mac.October 29, 2015 at 8:37 am #27328AnonymousJames, I suppose it depends on the sound-scape you want to capture.
Echoes can be very cool – for example
But these guys definitely aren’t garage band!
October 29, 2015 at 11:46 am #27333Anonymousi think for a fast up & running basic home recording setup for a apple mac is the mv51 & shure 440 headphones, using garage band. which will work with sax & acoustic guitar.
as 99% of my recordings will be just to check practice sessions, and not for uploading – i need a fast record/playback setup, i don’t want to waste valuable practice time twiddling about with quirky setups.
later on when it comes to uploading, i might invest in an audio interface & one of those mic’s that clip on the bell.
October 29, 2015 at 12:36 pm #27334AnonymousJames, I think that is a wiser choice going with the USB microphone.
The quality may be so good that you won’t have to buy another microphone for uploading?
