I was going to start learning some of your Beatles songs Johnny and when I looked at my files, I realized that I hadn’t bought them yet! So I went and bought the 4-set right away (please forgive me for that one! LOL) I’m amazed at the quality of your tracks and how they sound so much like the real thing as if the Beatles had done it in their studio. Do you record your own instruments and them sync them together or something? I’m just wondering because lots of people are using stuff to create what they call “MIDI” files (or something like that) and it sounds so generic. Your tracks sound so authentic. Hats off to you for sure. I think “Yesterday” is a perfect example of a song that sounds so good even in the normal range of the Saxophone…not everything goes well with the Altissimo range LOL.

MIDI is popular because anyone that has a MIDI sequencer setup can play those files and mix them anyway they want, even replacing instruments/sounds. the bad thing about it is it will only sound as good as the actual sound files you have to play the recorded notes. it may sound pretty awesome to the guy who recorded it with the best audio files in the world but you may not have those same quality files. They usually also sound very programmed and machine-like…not always, depending on the person who did it.
I play almost everything myself. Mostly real instruments. I do blend some virtual stuff sometimes like brass because I don’t play trumpet or trombone, but I can lay down 2-3 sax tracks and then add a synthetic brass part over it and it blends quite well if the balance is right. You can hear examples of this in some of my videos that I do for the backing tracks like I Was Made To Love Here, Mack The Knife…stuff with a big horn section.

For drums I can manually play them on drum pads and sometimes I’ll take an actual drum track my drummer did from a previous session and manipulate it to fit whatever I’m doing….usually it’s just a matter of changing the tempo and bamm, I have a real drum track played by a real drummer. Ween you start with a solid foundation like that its easier to make the end result sound quite good.
