This question is for Johnny. I see from the intro that you played with Collin James. I figure that you played the Sax in the song 5 long years. My brother in law wants me to play with him at a family reunion. Would have the music sheet for the Sax part of this song.
Thanks I like your site.January 4, 2015 at 7:01 am #13345I found this video online of Collin James playing 5 long years…..could that be Johnny in the video playing the Sax?!? This was done in 1988.
January 4, 2015 at 7:10 am #13346I think it is. I was listening to the same video and it look like him. We will wait maybe he will answer.
January 4, 2015 at 9:04 am #13347Thanks for the post of this video. I have never heard this. Classic 80’s sound there. Looks like Johnny! Way to rock it man! I was expecting one of your rocking solos though! It woulda been nice if the sax had a lead solo in place of one of those guitar ones! At any rate, that was pretty cool!! I love that sound you got going there. Was your setup the Guardala MB mp with the Java Green reeds then?? Just curious.
January 4, 2015 at 9:49 am #13348Talkin’ about a rockin’ Sax solo, If you look at this video of a live performance of Johnny (there’s lots of them on youtube) I think he’s playing here with Collin James too:

If we look on Johnny’s promotional video of him and his group “Johnny Ferreira and the Swing Machine” we can see him playing a completely different type of music with his Sax–seems like when he went off and formed his own band then he was able to play the kind of stuff that hits home with him–more of the kind of music modeled after that late 40s-early 50s. That classic 80’s style of playing is so good too!
January 4, 2015 at 12:51 pm #13351@Jake, we recorded 5 long Years before I found my Guardala setup and before I had a Mark 6. I think I was blowing on a Berg Larsen with Rico Royals on my Mark 7. The Mark 7, even tho it doesn’t feel as good as the 6 still has the edge on tone and even tho I don’t use it much I still have it. As for playin a sax solo instead of the guitar solo…are you nuts! It was Colin’ band not mine. Actually, when we played the song live I did play the solo with him, taking the 2nd guitar harmony.
@Michael, actually Micheal, the type of music that we did with Colin right from day one was jumpin swing with rock and roll. After a couple more pop records we did “Colin James and The Little Big Band” which was a throw back to that early rock and roll, jump, swing stuff from the late 40’s early 50’s. So, ya, when I took a break from touring with him I formed “Johnny Ferreira and the Swing Machine” which also played mostly that type of stuff. But we certainly played a lot of it with Colin too, and he actually turned me on to some cool stuff from that era as well.January 4, 2015 at 1:00 pm #13353Quote:Quote from saxjohnny on January 4, 2015, 12:51

January 4, 2015 at 2:38 pm #13355No I don’t. I’ve never written it down for anyone. If you can’t figure it out I can write it down for you but I’ve been very busy and now just got out of bed with the flu so it will be a while but get back to me on that and I’ll write it for you. It’s easy tho, starts on the high F# to F to C# on tenor.
January 4, 2015 at 2:50 pm #13357Thanks I will try this.
January 4, 2015 at 6:09 pm #13361Thanks for the input Johnny! During the 80’s especially your sax solo would have been magic in that tune! I know, we are the icing on the cake, LOL! Anyways, I love that classic 80’s sound you got going on in that video. I know I have asked this question in the past, I hope I’m not beating a dead horse.. I have a berg metal mp 120/0 and I can’t get that buzz sound rolling out of mine. Is there something you do while playing that generated that 80’s buzz?? Is there a hum or buzz you do while blowing into the mouthpiece?? I have numerous mouthpieces and can’t get the buzz sound?? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
