Beginning Improvisation Mini-Course

Introducing the Dominant 7 Scale

In this video

  • Introduction and preview to the upcoming lessons for the Beginning Improv Mini-Course
  • Getting to know and learning the dominant 7 scale
We are working with the song Tequila which is in the key of F major.
Therefore, if you’re playing a Bb sax (such as the tenor or soprano) you will be in the key of G.
If you’re playing an Eb sax (such as the alto or baritone) you will be in the key of D.

To Do:

Practice playing the dominant 7 scale. First work it out for accuracy then speed. When comfortable with it experiment along with the backing track. Keep it simple, play it up and down fully and even smaller sections of it. Try to keep in time with the backing track.

Your next lesson:

You’ll learn about creating short themes (riffs) from the scale.
I’ll demonstrate a few of these short riffs, then end with a very cool embellishment called the minor 3rd trill. I use this trill all the time and it’s a must for rock and blues-based music!

You’ll get an email with the link to this upcoming lesson soon.
