đ Hey guys,
I think a lot of times when Sax players think of King Curtis, we instantly think of him playing those super-high, screamin’, rockin’ Sax notes đ But I can’t help but LOVE this song of his “Misty” and how fabulous his tone was; just something about his tone that hits so good and it’s hard to describe. I’m curious if anyone happens to know what MP/reed combo King Curtis used in his playing.
November 21, 2014 at 8:55 am #13087I have 2 of his albums that are all Jazz, but I do love his rock and blues stuff the best. He used the top mp’s of the day like Otto Link but was most known probably for playing a Berg Larsen. The widest model plus I heard he used a hard reed.
On his album covers you’ll see both hard rubber and metal mp’s.
Dave Guardala of course modeled a piece after the King Curis sound which is the Guadala King (I have this mp as well as the Michael Brecker model).
The Berg was one of the best pieces in his day tho, remember that was in the 60’s so there weren’t nearly as many available as there are today.
I did write an article on them here:

I’ve read from numerous sources that lots of Sax players don’t like the Guardala King as good as the MBII; they say the King model is too “bright”. I put a post in “show us your sax” about someone whose willing to trade their Suzuki Alto Sax to me in exchange for cleaning their carpets on my off day, know anything about this lines of Saxophones? It’s not going to stop my from buying my Trevor James within 90 days of getting back home…it’s just hard to say no to, what appears to be, a good Saxophone. It’s got the side F# key.
November 21, 2014 at 9:45 pm #13093Speaking of BL – After no less than five attempts to grab a metal Berg Larsen on ebay in the past month I have finally secured a Berg Larsen Grained alto 95/2 mint for $100 which is on it’s way to me. I am excited and have some tunes picked out to post as soon as it lands. This mouthpiece hunt on line is a bit of a gamble but I am sure it will be a beaut! The 4c is sounding particularly good lately though so I guess I am improving my embouchure but I notice now that when I try to push it loud it wont come along for the ride. Clearly a sign I am ready to part company. The Berg’s get a real good wrap by many all over the place so here’s hoping.
