Hey johnny. I was wondering if you use different setups for your tenor depending on the type of music you play. Here is my dilemma. I use a custom Guardala King style metal mouthpiece that I had custom made. It plays unbelievably easy and I love the tone vibration and brightness that I get from it while playing some classic rock and roll oldies like the Wanderer and Aint that a Shame. I use Rigotti gold 2.5 tenor reeds.
Now when I go to play slower songs like Can’t help falling in love and Unchained Melody, I can hear a brightness in the sound that I do not like when I use that setup. I just started trying some rico select unfiled reeds and that brightness is definitely tapered off as compared to my other setup, The rico’s play a little stiffer compared to the rigotti’s. I actually like them better for the slower stuff (sound wise), although I am just starting with them so time will tell. I was almost ready to look at a different mouthpiece (like a HR) when I switch gears to slower stuff.
What do you do? Do you use the same setup for everything, or do you have a different setup depending on what you play? Thanks for your valuable advice!!

October 23, 2014 at 4:26 pm #12849I’ll see what I can do sxpoet. I am going to my buddies house Tuesday night. He plays guitar and I will see if I can get him to let me record a live version of us for the forum. I love it, I use a ton of gritty growls. They are really starting to develop for me. Fits so good in this old rock n roll!!
October 23, 2014 at 5:18 pm #12851no, I don’t change it around at all. I do suffer a bit on the slow and low stuff cause my setup is jacked for the upper and louder stuff but I just work harder down there. You could experiment a bit more with reeds as they do differ enough to make it better for what you’re doing. I For me, changing the whole setup is too much work, especially within one playing session or gig. It could be worth it to have a softer type mp for sure if you just can’t swing what you want with the same one…it’s totally understandable and by the sounds of things something you’ll probably check out.
