😉 While I’m out here in NM with an Alto Sax only, I’m trying to transpose the Sax solo for “Tequila” to the Alto as many of my family and friends want to hear it but had only learned to play it on the Tenor. While working on it in Alto, a friend of mine out here was under the impression that not there weren’t that many Professional Sax players who are female and I don’t think that’s entire accurate. The one who comes to my mind immediately is Candy Dulfer and she specializes in playing the Alto–check out this lady’s tone! Lots of us may think that we have need to have a Tenor to get that Rockin’ Sax sound we all love so much and admittingly I’m probably guilty of thinking that way. But playing with my Alto only right now for is “forcing” me to think a lot differently about that point of view.

http://youtu.be/U15HQJwqsIoOctober 16, 2014 at 2:53 am #12786She is quite an unbelievable player Babs. I currently am listening a heap to the Summer Horns with Koz, Albright, Elliott and of course Mindi Abair, the only female. Check em out on youtube – Very cool stuff! And of course Kaori Kobayashi is a really accomplished player. I went to Brisbane city today and played around ten mouthpieces in an effort to find a setup better than the 4c yamaha. I settled on the Meyer 5 as it sounded really good and enable me to get out the high F# with some ease. Looks good for the altissimo course soon Johnny but baby steps first! Not quite ready for the metal upgrade as Mr Baboon has but maybe one day. Incidentally I took home some Vandoran reds and they were very good compared to the ZZ’s I have been using. I was happy but what it did was confirm that this search for THE setup is gonna be a long one. So many variables out there. The sales guy was a player and play he did! WOW. to be that close to a guy playing like he did was awe inspiring. I am going along tomorrow night to his gig in the city to watch some live stuff. That was the first time I have actually heard some live sax up close and personal. If you can somehow do it I recommend it.
October 16, 2014 at 3:58 am #12787Anonymousbetter still Dazza – if you get the opportunity to listen to students of various levels of experience, from beginners who have only been playing a year, right up to students in their 8th grade year giving a performance, go for it!
i’ve been to several and the variation in Sax sounds is really wide, from dull & flat, squeaky & sharp,
– all these students had their sax’s tuned up before playing!
The setup does give you an advantage on the style of playing ie classical/Jazz/rock.
Rubber/metal – traditionaly rubber leans towards classical, but you can rock with rubber.
Some setups are better for large room projection and not suitable for small rooms.
My sax teacher plays gigs weekly – when he demonstrates a piece, its like master class!October 16, 2014 at 5:18 am #12788Hey Dazza, I knew about Mindi and Kaori as professional female Sax players, but it was Candi who immediately came to my mind when I answered my friend’s inquiry about female Saxophone players…….all 3 of those ladies are ubelievable players!
Good for you Dazza about not missing any steps too. Actually, if you look on the video of that I posted of “Lily Was Here”, you’ll notice that she’s playing with a Hard-Rubber MP; take a good look at it. There’s plenty of Pro Sax players out there who play with Hard Rubber MPs too. We find what works for us individually and stick with it. I have a really good backing track and Sheet Music for “Lily Was Here” and I plan to start learning it soon after I get back home.October 16, 2014 at 8:16 am #12790Very cool Dazza, currently I also have a Meyer 5 or 6 for alto. I also like the Claude Lakey which I did a comparison video for on the blog.

October 17, 2014 at 2:15 am #12793Thanks Jake. Is the metal CL MP aluminium?? It sthe only black metal one I can see on the Amazon link.
October 17, 2014 at 8:58 am #12794I found a page on amazon with all the Claude Lakey alto mp’s here:
https://howtoplaysaxophone.org/cluade-Lakey-altomost are hard rubber but if you scroll down a bit and you’ll see a few a aluminum, these are the ones I am refering to. not hard rubber not metal. they cost more but the difference is worth it if you’re going for that direction in your tone.
October 17, 2014 at 9:41 am #12795Hey Johnny, I really appreciated your review on the Trevor James & MP set up…..it’s coming my way very, VERY soon after I get back home and I’m super, super excited to say the least 🙂 We got thrown a “curve” ball and it was frustrating because I had the $ IN MY HANDS when everything happened in the spring………frustration to say the least. My wife is a bus driver and, once she got the medical clearance to return to work, she even took on extra field trips to help me save the $ that I originally had set aside 🙂
How would you rate the Trevor James RAW model of Saxophone that I’m getting–would you consider it to be an Intermediate-level Sax, Pro Model Sax, etc.? The know there is the RAW XS model but I liked the sound of the RAW models a little bit better. -
