It seems as though the Mark vi is the holy grail of the sax world! The mark vii is the remake of the mark vi. Whats your take of the mark vii? It seems as though they are considerable less expensive than the vi. Would there be much of a playing difference? The intonation and sound quality similar? When the times right, I want to make the investment once. Thanks for your input.
August 16, 2014 at 12:21 pm #12450AnonymousHi Jake,
i went into my local music shop, whose staff are run by orchestra musicians in their spare time.
I was talking to the Sax guy about upgrading my sax, and he was saying everyone aspires to a Selmar.
He mirrored what Johnny said, you have to take your mouthpiece setup in the shop and try them out.
Some people didn’t like the sound of Selmars when they tried them out he said.
I’ve done my research, and i’m going for a reference 54 when the time comes,
the only bad reviews i’ve read about the mark Vi are that some people say they have to try several
of them out before they find one they like.
The guy in the shop said the sound of the series 2 & 3’s & reference 54’s were distinctly different.
but i go only with Johnny’s view – try before you buy!August 16, 2014 at 12:40 pm #12451Yea, I agree with the try before you buy sxpoe, but, when you don’t have anything local you are stuck to shopping online. The selmers are vintage horns and unfortunately sax shops that sell new horns with return policies probably wouldn’t fit into this category. 🙁
Also, you can find some decent deals online, but then again, run the risk of needing repairs. The search continues…….. LOL.Just looking for a take on the mark vii, I know everyone will fair different with the horn. I have read someplace that the mark vii are darker sounding than the mark vi? I dont have any experience in this area and was just looking for some feedback if anyone else has? The selmer 54’s look pretty sweet!! Good luck in landing one of those. I also wondered if a vintage horn would be better than a newer horn. Sound versus playability. I know my older vito tenor plays a lot rougher than my newer Hawk tenor, the action of the hawk is alot smoother feeling and I feel has a better tone. But I am also using beginner horns and am sure the quality improves with the professional model horn. Too bad the stork couldn’t just drop one off. HAHA
August 16, 2014 at 12:57 pm #12452I have a Mark V1 and a Mark V11. The 6 feels better but the 7 sounds better. I don’t like the bulky low note right hand cluster on the 7…takes some getting used to especially when playing it only once in a while.
During a studio session with a big name producer I was in the middle of recording a solo when we had to stop for a few minutes due to some tech stuff in the control room. I had been doing takes with my 6 but while they were busy I switched to my 7. We continued on the solo and after the first go-round the producer asked me what did I do, did I change my horn. I said why do you ask, he said cause it sounds better now.
I use my 6 way more because it feels better so I thought of selling the 7. Had talked to the guys in the sax shop to possibly get a buyer for me but then a guy in my band knocked my 6 off it’s stand and caused some real damage. The shop had it for a long time and again I had to play the 7 during this period. The guys in the shop (all sax players) all said how much better the sound of it was and so convinced me not to sell it!
August 16, 2014 at 1:05 pm #12453AnonymousQuite right Jake – the guy in the shop said pro horns sounded
a lot different to the beginner & intermediate horns.
I mentioned to the guy that when the time comes i’d like
to try our several 54’s, he said his shop only had one
but he could arrange to get several of them sent to his
shop from other branches – basicaly at that price their
prepared to jump through hoops to complete a
sale.
If you google windblowers nottingham, thats my
local shop & they don’t stock lots of the same instruments!
My other option, is to travell to London by train (2 hours),
and spend all day in a store with a bigger stock!
wouldn’t you be able to do the same thing?August 16, 2014 at 4:06 pm #12455that’s an amazing story johnny. thanks for sharing!! I have seen mark vii for 1800-2500 whereas mark vi 3500 and up!! For sure it would be nice to try one out first before the purchase but your story helps in the decision making process. Thanks again!!
Yea sxpoe, I have about a 5 hour drive to new york city. I am sure i could get my hands on various tenors there. When I am ready, it may be worth the drive and just make a weekend visit to the city. It’s a major purchase and should be treated as one. Thanks again for the tips and advice!!
