      Hey Johnny,
I shared my recent video of the Watermelon Man with family and friends on my contact list–it’s a good way to keep in touch with others. When a local music academy responded to my e-mail earlier today, one of their people said he was 100% convinced that my playing was fake! Today was an off day for me, so I decided to stop by their shop and visit them……..
I talked with the instructor who said my playing was fake and asked him about it, he said it didn’t look like I was hitting the right keys in comparison to the scale being played and the rhythm of the song. So I asked him to take a seat……I put your backing track on their stereo system and literally played the Watermelon Man right in front of his face with him sitting in the chair; and I do mean that I played it……….as loud as I possibly could, growling, trilling, etc.. I’m not sure what came over me but I really was letting it loose. Of course, he didn’t believe me when I told him how long I had been playing either.
As you can imagine, I left the shop feeling really good about what I did and to prove that I did indeed play this song and I don’t want to make a big deal out of nothing…..but can you believe the nerve of some people?!? Unbelievable.
Thanks for all your instruction Johnny 🙂

While watching your video there is nothing fake about it… your fingers are moving exactly to the notes being heard, the sound, everything. I told you about people on youtube saying I’m a fake too. I’m not surprised about idiot’s on youtube but someone who’s “supposedly” highly trained in music? Unbelievable. Actually, a “music academy” can be quality or crap depending on who’s working there. It;’s different at a higher learning institution like college or university but a music academy can literally be someone’s house or storefront.
But anyway, good for you for showing up like that and giving a command performance!

It freaked me out a little when I got that e-mail–one of the first things they asked me when I wanted to see what the deal was is, “how come on the solo you didn’t show your face?” In other words, one of the guys was insinuating that it wasn’t me playing it…..ludicrous. That’s why I asked him to take a seat and played it right in front of him like you see on video, telling him that the way we filmed the solo was actually my son’s idea. I kind of felt the “air” leave the room, so to say, when I did show them that it was me. Right before leaving, I told my accuser–whose name I won’t mention here–I said to him “And FYI, the man who has been teaching me how to play did say on my solo for the video that a few of my notes, here-and-there, we off rhythm by just a little bit….after all I was tired from a long day at the clinic; but I’m working on it” 😉
Being a student player, I would never have thought a Music Academy would say/think something like that, so I’m glad you brought that point out about it can depend. From my perspective, I would think they would be encouraging and maybe even provide a few pointers to me. Crazy experience but, nonetheless, an important learning curve for me.

people are entitled to their oppinions and to me its ok if they address you personally about what they think about your performance,
be it good or bad at least you know you’ve got their attention.
If they don’t believe its you playing thats an even greater complement!

Yeah, that’s the way I see it too…..but we don’t have to be an advanced player to look at what was being played on video and even remotely think that it was fake. You can see just as clear as anything that I am playing those notes. The USB mic I use is fairly simple and I don’t have elaborate recording equipment for blog uploads….the Selmer Tenor I use is much more bright and edgy than what it sounds like on video too. In time soon to come, I’ll be looking for Johnny’s help to get started with home recording as I don’t have any kind of recording equipment right now that will let me experiment with things like reverb, echo, etc and will do a much better job of recording v.s. the simple USB mic; but for blog uploads it’s fine for now.

the problem i have is – if i was to video my playing i would spend about 2 hrs getting everything setup & tested & then i would have to put everything away again (soul destroying), for me i just record the sound with an iTouch, so if people don’t believe its me playing – tough!
Like yourself later on i want to get a tascom & some microphones & hopefuly get better recordings, but it doesn’t get round the problem of videoing.
