I got the series of “The Big Horn” in the mail…….WOW. It comes with 4 CDs with a total of 99 songs from famous artists like Illinois Jacquet, Hal Singer, Big Jay, Lee Allen, Fats Noel; the list goes on and on. It comes with a book for you to read that talks about the History of the ‘Honkin’ & Screamin’ Saxophone…loads of terrific information; which is what I really enjoy because it’s a real plus knowing some of the history behind the music we love. Put this stuff in your CD player and I can assure you, you’ll be amazed by what you hear–absolutely fantastic stuff. This is Rock and Roll, Jazz, R&B music WAY before some guy pulled out the guitar to play what people today would consider 50’s Rock to be. It shows how the Tenor especially became what is called the “incubator” for 50’s rock.

I would strongly encourage all members to go to Johnny’s other site; johnnyferreira.com go through his links to start your collection of “Honkers and Screamers” You’ll be glad that you did 🙂 In a few weeks, I’ll order the next volume in the Honkers and Screamers collection.

I’ll have to buy it at some stage!
now i know why Johnny honks in some of his recordings!

just a few below i liked!
eddie chamblee – in southern comfort
earl bostic – steam whistle jump
        jimmy forest – night train

but need to listen to them all properly!

Ya good stuff. You’ll notice Earl Bostic in there and he’s an alto player. Listen to his tone and it sometimes sounds so big you’d think he’s playing a tenor.

Wow – i didn’t realise Earl Bostic played alto!
just went on you tube & listened to him playing misty
            and bugle call rag!! Wow!!
The speed that guy played bugle call rag is phenominal!
My jaw literally dropped! He must have all hours to get
            to that standard!
