Hi everyone,
Just joined after 30 or so years dreaming of playing the sax, but work and home life putting it to the back of my mind where it lay forgotten. At the age of 44 i’ve now decided to do something about it after i stumbled upon Johnny’s arrangement of Pink Floyd’s “Us and Them”. A rummage through my old CD’s unearthed Dire Straights “Your Latest Trick”, and Wesley Magoogan’s great alto solo on Hazel O’Connor’s “Will you” and i knew that the time was right to learn.
So here i am. The nice lady in my local music shop spent a good half hour showing me how to blow, and i managed to get a decent sound out of both alto and tenor. She even had me playing a few scales! I’ll be returning soon to choose my first sax. I’m leaning towards the tenor as i found the fingering easier than the alto, and am looking at either the Trevor James Horn Classic, or the Bauhaus.
Anyway, thats enough waffle. I’m happy to be here and hope to learn a lot, but expecting many trials and torments along the way!Best regards to all,
Tim.

Whether you decide on alto or tenor you’ll love it as they each have their own thing… I guess it always boils down to which sound you really like best.Personally, I’m not familiar with the Bauhaus, obviously German made which could be a good sign, but I can vouch for the Trevor James horns as being very nice to play and well made.
good luck!

hope you get the sax your after soon mate and good luckYep, you rumbled me! Rode a Ducati 750 for a few years before rupturing a spinal disc playing rugby. Couldn’t get on with the riding position after that so traded it in for a ZZR1200, which Mrs Kneedown loved as she could go more than 50 miles on the back without getting sore!
Currently without a bike though after selling the ZZR to pay for the Caribbean Cruise i promised her for her 50th Birthday. Looking at Moto Guzzi’s for the next one though. Thanks to all for the warm welcome!
May 24, 2013 at 3:10 pm #10971Awesome–I just started to learn how to play the Sax too as Johnny is awesome and is a great help. Planning on getting a one-one-one lesson with him though the cpu in time soon to come! Glad you’re here on this site too.
June 20, 2013 at 9:06 am #11058Thanks again to all for the warm welcome!
I now have my baby!
In the end I paid a bit more for a Yamaha YTS280. Tried the Trevor James (Beautiful Sound!) and two Bauhaus’s. The Yam sounded as good as the TJ but the action seemed that little more positive, which i thought might be better for a beginner like me.
Had a couple of lessons from my Son-in-Laws band mate so he could see first hand what i’m doing right and wrong! Along with this site and loads of practice i’m thoroughly enjoying it and am looking forward to making progress.Regards to all,
Tim.
June 20, 2013 at 9:46 am #11060Congrats Tim, sounds like you made a good decision with your horn.
Do you have a mouthpiece with it?June 21, 2013 at 10:45 pm #11061It came with the standard Yamaha plastic 4c mouthpiece.
